Job Description

Lawrence University, a selective undergraduate liberal arts college and conservatory of music located in the vibrate and diverse city of Appleton, Wisconsin, invites applications for a full-time Visiting Assistant Professor of Education (open area) with a culturally responsive and anti-racist lens to begin September 1, 2022.

We seek a scholar-activist who demonstrates a lived experience with or ongoing commitment to working with the communities that their research represents and impacts, and whose teaching and research advances understanding of culturally responsive education (broadly defined). Candidates with experience in indigenous, international, environmental, and/or non-Western educational models are encouraged to apply. This is an interdisciplinary appointment as a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Mielke Family Department of Education at Lawrence and as a Faculty Fellow in the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI).

The successful candidate will be expected to dedicate two-thirds of their time teaching a total of three courses over three 10-week terms – of which at least one will be in the candidate’s specialty area, and two additional courses that contribute to the Education curriculum – while dedicating one-third of their time focusing on their research agenda and contributing to campus-wide diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racist initiatives led by the office of DEI.

Priority will be given to candidates with a Doctorate in Education or a closely related field by the time of appointment. However, ABD candidates will also receive full consideration and should submit the following materials by July 8, 2022, at https://lawrence.peopleadmin.com/: (1) a cover letter, (2) a curriculum vitae, including names and contact information for three individuals who can be solicited for letters of recommendation, and (3) a statement on diversity. The diversity statement should describe the candidate’s experience related to addressing issues of diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism in an academic setting and ways that they would contribute to these efforts at Lawrence.

Review of applications will begin the week of July 11, 2022 and continue until the position is filled.
Lawrence is committed to enhancing the diversity of its faculty and staff. We encourage applications from individuals who will help us create a more inclusive Lawrence by: (1) further diversifying the faculty and/or (2) demonstrating experience with successful diversity-related initiatives, creative activity, or research; and (3) showing interest in developing inclusive pedagogy to address the needs of a diverse student body.

Candidates are encouraged to read more about Lawrence at https://lawrence.peopleadmin.com as well as www.lawrence.edu/ and Colleges That Change Lives. For further information, please contact Dr. Eric Mayes (eric.mayes@lawrence.edu) or Dr. Stewart C. Purkey (stewart.c.purkey@lawrence.edu) the co-chairs of the search committee.
