Assistant Professor – Scenic Design – Tenure Track

Theatre & Cinema in Virginia Tech’s School of Performing Arts (http://www.sopa.vt.edu) seeks a theatre artist to teach graduate and undergraduate scenic design, projection design, scenic artistry, and related crafts.  We seek a colleague with recent and continuing professional practice and an eye towards emerging trends and technologies.

Duties and responsibilities include design or student supervision of scenic design, projection design, artistry, and props for all productions in our annual season; instruction of courses and serving as primary advisor on all scenic design topics, projects and theses to graduate and undergraduate students; maintaining research suited to the candidate’s and school’s successful growth; student recruitment; service on school and university committees; conference attendance; and additional duties assigned by the Faculty Chair or Director of the School.  The successful candidate will instruct students with a hands-on approach in our individualized tutorial practice.  The successful applicant will be expected to work professionally and maintain a national profile in the discipline.  Initial appointment begins in August 2023.

Required qualifications include MFA in scene design by appointment start date (August 10, 2023); professional and academic experience; proficiency in scenic art, projection design, properties, computer aided drafting, computer rendering, and model making.

Preferred qualifications include membership in United Scenic Artists; prior experience teaching, recruiting, and supervising students in a graduate program; experience in film, and television design.
