Job Description
The University of Southern California, one of the nation’s top research universities, seeks a candidate for a teaching position (Lecturer or higher rank) to teach undergraduate and graduate students in courses offered by the Engineering in Society Program (https://eis.usc.edu) in the USC Viterbi School of Engineering. This is a full-time, benefits-eligible teaching faculty position on the non-tenure track. The EiS Program offers undergraduate and graduate courses in engineering communication. Courses aim to teach students technical communication, engineering ethics, and critical thinking about the role of engineering in society. Course curricula center on written and oral communication skills for a variety of audiences. The anticipated start date is August 16, 2023 (Fall 2023).
The USC Viterbi School is committed to increasing the diversity of its faculty and welcomes applications from women; individuals of African, Hispanic, and Native American descent; veterans; and individuals with disabilities. We are interested in exceptional candidates at all levels.
Applications must include a cover letter, detailed curriculum vitae, and names of at least three professional references—at least two of whom must be familiar with and able to comment on the applicant’s teaching experience. Applications must also include a teaching statement explaining the applicant’s relevant experience and approach to teaching, as well as a separate diversity statement describing the applicant’s relevant experience and approach to fostering inclusive environment working with students from diverse backgrounds, and incorporating multifarious perspectives. While we seek applications at the level of Lecturer, in exceptional cases, applicants with longer and more accomplished teaching experience may also be considered for a commensurate higher-ranked position (e.g., Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor of Practice, or Professor of Practice). Applications should be submitted by Nov. 1, 2022 in order to receive full consideration; however, applications received after this date may also be considered until the position is filled.
Qualifications
Candidates must have documented evidence of successful teaching at the college level in engineering or science communication. An earned Ph.D. in a relevant field or equivalent is required at the start of the appointment. Evidence of research interest and/or industry experience in a related field is welcome but not required. The USC Viterbi School has a large international student population, so candidates should have demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups of students, staff, and faculty.
Job Description
The primary duty is to teach upper-division undergraduate engineering communication courses and other courses (undergraduate and graduate) in the new Engineering in Society Program. Other duties include curriculum development and service to the program, school, and university. Typical teaching load is 20 units, with the remaining effort devoted to teaching and service. Faculty rank will be determined based on the candidate’s qualifications.
USC is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, protected veteran status, disability, or any other characteristic protected by law or USC policy. USC will consider for employment all qualified applicants with criminal histories in a manner consistent with the requirements of the Los Angeles Fair Chance Initiative for Hiring ordinance.
