Position Summary

The Division of Community Health Sciences (CHS) at the University of Illinois Chicago School of Public Health is committed to developing a skilled public health workforce and a new generation of community and population health scientists. Our research, education, practice, and service endeavors reflect a strong commitment to advancing the aims of social justice in an inclusive manner across diverse communities. As such, we emphasize mutual learning, cultural humility, capacity building, and sustainability of community-based research and practice, all of which are informed by both life course and socioecological perspectives. Our faculty and students focus on advancing knowledge and change along a continuum of factors that affect human health, at the individual, community, and system levels. We utilize rigorous quantitative and qualitative methods in collaboration with traditional and nontraditional research partners, including community stakeholders. Our applied focus involves translational research and leads to broad-based dissemination of innovative public health interventions. We emphasize engaged learning environments that include partnering with public health and community-based practitioners to align our teaching with community needs and expertise.

CHS houses a federally funded Center of Excellence in Maternal and Child Health (CoE-MCH) which aims to build MCH public health capacity, foster health equity and social justice, and develop MCH leaders across the workforce continuum in order to improve the health and well-being of women, children, and families including children and youth with special health care needs (CYSHCN).

CHS invites applications for two open rank positions (Assistant, Associate, or Full) either tenure track or tenured in CHS for individuals with interest, skills, background and expertise in any of the following areas:

– Reproductive and perinatal health;
– Child and adolescent health;
– Local, state, and national programs, policies, and systems that address maternal and child health issues and health inequities across the life course.

We are also seeking an individual in one of these positions to take a leadership role in the Center of Excellence in Maternal and Child Health; this individual should be interested in issues of training and curriculum development for graduate students at the MPH and doctoral levels, as well as building and maintaining relationships with public health agency and community partners in the MCH workforce including state Title V agencies.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

• Hold a doctoral degree in public health, community health, psychology, sociology, anthropology, public policy, or a related field.
• Be able to conduct and publish research on maternal and child health issues and inequities in areas such as reproductive and pregnancy outcomes, areas related to well-woman care/prenatal care/postpartum care, child and/or adolescent health, and/or CYSHCN.
• Have experience teaching courses in maternal and child health with a particular focus on reproductive/perinatal, or women’s/maternal/infant health, or child and/or adolescent health and/or CYSHCN.
• Have experience writing either research and or evaluation grants in one or more areas of maternal and child health with a focus on inequities across the life course.
• Have the ability to contribute to the knowledge base in maternal and child health at the local, state, national, and international levels.
• Be able to support the training of an MCH workforce that is equipped to inform programmatic efforts leading to improved maternal and child health and reduced inequities across the life course.
• Have experience giving invited or peer-reviewed presentations in important national and international forums/meetings.
• Have a history of providing service to the MCH profession/discipline and/or to a prior department/school/university.

Preferred Qualifications

• A defined research focus as stated above.
• Evidence of potential for obtaining independent external research funding or, in the case of applicants for a tenured Associate or Full appointment, a record of success in obtaining external research funding.
• An MPH degree from a CEPH-accredited program or School of Public Health.
• Willingness to contribute to the growth and success of the CoE-MCH through service activities.
• Evidence of a commitment to addressing health inequities through research, teaching, and service.
• Evidence of a commitment to community partnerships and engagement.
• Familiarity with state and local MCH public health practice.
• Unique qualities that offer the CoE-MCH and CHS an opportunity to expand its vision and impact.
• For those seeking a leadership position within the CoE-MCH, evidence of a commitment to training and education of diverse graduate students and the MCH public health workforce and evidence of prior connections/interaction with MCH public health practice including state Title V or the national Maternal and Child Health Bureau.
