Tenure-track Assistant Professor of Theatre
The Davidson College Department of Theatre invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor starting Fall 2023. We seek an artist-scholar with expertise in the performance traditions and practice of the global majority, such as Black American Theater, Latinx Theatre, Asian American Theatre, Native American Drama, and/or other artistic traditions outside of the Western canon. The successful candidate will demonstrate the capacity for excellence in artistic, scholarly, and pedagogical practice in a liberal arts context.
The successful candidate will be able to expand the scope of our production season by staging work by playwrights from groups that have been historically under-represented in American theatre, or through innovative approaches to the creation of new theatrical work about the histories and stories of marginalized communities. We are especially committed to deepening our capacity to stage work by Afrodiasporic, Latinx, Asian American, and Asian theatre artists. The individual would teach beginning acting as well as courses that expand our curriculum; specifically, the successful candidate will develop courses which center the performance traditions and practices of the global majority. Candidates who can teach courses that could be cross-listed with other departments or interdisciplinary programs (e.g., Africana Studies, Arab Studies, East Asian Studies, Environmental Studies, and Latin American Studies) are desirable. The hire will be committed to teaching theatre within a liberal arts context, practicing inclusive pedagogy, mentoring students of diverse backgrounds and identities, and working interdisciplinarily to build community.
Requirements: MFA in Acting, Directing, or Performance and/or Ph.D. in Theatre and experience or strong interest in directing/devising. Two years of teaching experience at the collegiate level is strongly preferred. Course load is 5 courses per year (four courses for the first year), of which one course is fulfilled through directing or devising within the departmental season each year. Service to the College and Department, including committee membership and advising/mentoring of students, is required. The successful candidate will maintain a vigorous creative/scholarly practice commensurate with expectations for achieving and maintaining tenure at Davidson College. Start date is July 1, 2023.
Davidson College is a highly selective, residential, four-year liberal arts college, located 20 miles from Charlotte, NC that is consistently ranked among the top liberal arts colleges in the country. Davidson faculty enjoy a low faculty-student ratio, emphasis on and appreciation of excellence in teaching, and outstanding research facilities. The Davidson College Department of Theatre is committed to creative and critical inquiry that reflects on, illuminates, and celebrates the diversity of the human experience. Through collaboration, interdisciplinarity, community building, and an embrace of innovative artistic and teaching practices, we prepare students from across the campus, including our majors and minors, to be empathetic artist-scholar-citizens who use their skills to engage with the most pressing concerns of our world. We produce four shows annually in two performance spaces, a 550-seat proscenium theatre and a 150-seat flexible space. All facilities within the Cunningham Theatre Center, including the Barber Theatre, performance and design studios, and scene shop, are state-of-the-art and recently renovated.

The position is open until filled, with review of applications beginning November 11, 2022. Candidates should submit a cover letter which addresses their commitment to diversity and inclusivity as a scholar-artist and as a teacher, cv, names and contact information for 4 references (letters will be requested at a later date), titles and brief descriptions (200 words or less) of 2-3 new courses that would demonstrate the ways your expertise could expand our curriculum.
At Davidson College, we believe the college grows stronger by recruiting and retaining a diverse faculty and staff committed to building an inclusive community. In order to achieve and sustain educational excellence, we seek to hire talented faculty and staff across the intersections of diverse races, ethnicities, religions, sexual orientations, gender identities, ages, socio-economic backgrounds, political perspectives, abilities, cultures, and national origins.
