Job Description

The Women’s and Gender Studies Program at Virginia Tech in the Academy of Transdisciplinary Studies (ATS) located in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences invites applications for a one-year Instructor position to begin August 10, 2023.  Two positions are available; one will mainly provide undergraduate teaching support for Women’s and Gender Studies, and the other for Africana Studies and Women’s and Gender Studies. Candidates’ home departments may be English, Political Science, or Sociology.

The expected teaching load is 4/4. Courses that need instruction include Introduction to Women’s and Gender Studies and/or Introduction to Africana Studies. Other available courses include Black Feminisms, Feminist Activism, Asian and Asian American Feminism, and Global Feminism.

We seek dynamic and collaborative candidates who demonstrate evidence of excellent teaching and will continue to advance Virginia Tech’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. The courses will be taught mainly in person, although ideally candidates will also be familiar with online teaching.

The ATS is a dynamic, innovative, and highly interdisciplinary Academy that is creating a slate of new interdisciplinary minors in the fields of Asian American Studies, Disability Studies, Latino/a/x Studies, LGBTQ Studies, Food Studies, and Animal Studies. It also has programs in WGS, Africana Studies, and American Indian Studies.  Women’s and Gender Studies and Africana Studies also offer Graduate Certificates.

Applicants should have a Ph.D by August 2023 in any of the following: Women’s and Gender Studies, Africana Studies, English, Political Science, Sociology, or closely related fields. The position requires disciplinary expertise in any one or more of the following areas: feminist activism, women of color feminisms, Black feminisms, Asian and Asian American feminisms, and/or global gender inequities.
