Job Description

 

The Department of Speech Pathology & Audiology at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR), within the School of Medicine, is seeking a full-time faculty member in speech-language pathology with teaching and research interests in medical speech pathology. This is a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. This is a 12-month faculty position located in beautiful Reno, Nevada. Academic rank and salary are commensurate with qualifications.

UNR is a land grant university in the State of Nevada. Nevada is a growing state with vast medical needs including the demand for well-trained speech-language pathologists. The UNR speech pathology and audiology department (UNR-SPA) aims to fill the gap by preparing students to become exceptional clinicians by cultivating an interactive learning environment that promotes critical thinking through the introduction to scientific rigor. UNR-SPA offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. programs. The graduate program is CAA-accredited. The department offers a comprehensive university-based speech and hearing clinic in partnership with University Health, as operated by Renown Health. The department provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment of individuals of all ages in our region. In addition, we offer specialty clinical experiences in cleft palate, autism, language, literacy, aphasia, swallowing, and voice. The department consists of nine full-time faculty who work together to support each other and the missions of the department and university with culturally responsive practices. Tenured faculty members are active in research, teaching, clinical supervision and education.

 

The anticipated start date is July 1, 2024.

 

Required Qualifications

 

• PhD in Communication Sciences and Disorders or Speech-Language Pathology.

• Ability to work in an interdisciplinary capacity with health care professionals across the university and the community.

• ASHA CCC-SLP and Nevada Licensure in Speech Language Pathology (or be eligible).

 

Preferred Qualifications

 

• Expertise in at least one of the following areas is preferred:

 

• Acquired neurogenic disorders and medical-based services

• Voice, motor speech, cleft palate-craniofacial, anatomy & physiology of speech mechanism, neuroscience for speech pathology & audiology, augmentative and alternative communication.

 

• Experience in and ability to provide clinical education and supervision.

• Demonstrate scholarship potential in respective research interests, develop grant proposals, and obtain external funding.

• Evidence of a commitment to culturally responsive practices in diverse and inclusive contexts and communities.

• Committed to applying current best-practices to teaching, clinical education, and research

• Interested in fostering the development of students to become professional leaders.

Duties & Responsibilities

 

Provide didactic and clinical instruction during the 12-month calendar year (Fall, Spring, Summer) to support the educational mission of the department. This may include involvement in our undergraduate (BS) degree, Master of Science in speech-language pathology (MS), and research doctorate in speech-language pathology (Ph.D.) programs. Specific assignments are dependent on departmental needs and the background of the individual.

 

Teaching

 

• Teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses.

• Develop and manage curriculum, course content, and/or adapting coursework.

• Provide clinical education of graduate students through clinical supervision and mentoring.

• Lead independent study research/academic experiences for students.

• Mentor, advise, and participate on student committees.

 

Research/scholarly pursuits

 

• Establish a program of research.

• Apply for funding related to research area(s).

• Engage in dissemination of research.

 

Service

 

• Service to department, school, university, and/or profession by serving on committees that are appropriate to the mission of the Department.

• Academic advising of graduate students.
