University of Illinois Chicago (UIC)

Position Description:

The Division of Health Policy and Administration (HPA) in the School of Public Health (SPH) at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) invites applications for a tenure-track or tenured faculty position at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level. The successful candidate should have a research background in health policy or health services research with a focus on aging across diverse populations, especially those from underrepresented groups. The successful candidate is expected to have a PhD in or closely related to any of the following fields: health policy, public health, health informatics, health economics, or behavioral and social sciences. A strong record of teaching, research, and experience with extramurally funded research grants is expected commensurate with career stage.

This position is part of a UIC Chancellor-sponsored Cluster Hire initiative entitled Health Promotion for Racially and Ethnically Diverse Older Adults. This initiative offers opportunities for collaboration with other faculty in the UIC Cluster specializing in related research in Disability and Human Development, Physical Therapy, and Community Health Sciences. In addition to holding a faculty appointment in HPA and being part of the UIC Aging Cluster, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to join the Center for Research on Health and Aging (CRHA). Housed in SPH, CRHA is a campus-wide focal point for research on aging at UIC. CRHA facilitates the work of researchers who address complex questions about population health challenges from an interdisciplinary perspective. CHRA seeks to understand and reduce racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic disparities in the prevalence and burdens of chronic disease among older adults. CRHA is home to a Roybal Center for Translational Research on Aging, which has been funded by the National Institute on Aging/NIH since 1998 and has been a national and international leader in the development, testing, and translation of evidence-based health promotion programs for older adults. Additionally, the UIC campus-wide Institute for Health Research and Policy houses a Resource Center for Minority Aging (RCMAR), newly funded by the National Institute on Aging/NIH, to continuously develop research and mentoring infrastructure for early-career faculty.

About UIC, SPH, and the HPA Division:
Located in the heart of one of the most vibrant cities in the United States, UIC is Chicago’s largest university and its only public research institution. Its 16 academic colleges serve nearly 34,000 students, comprising one of the most diverse student bodies in the nation, and it is designated as a Minority Serving Institution (MSI), an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution (AANAPSI), and a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI). The University’s institutional commitment and support for diverse student populations has been recognized nationally, including being a multi-year winner of the Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education. UIC is also among the nation’s preeminent urban public research universities, designated as a Carnegie RU/VH research institution. During fiscal year 2023, UIC received $509 million in research funding, with approximately three-quarters coming from federal sources.

UIC SPH is the only public health school in Illinois that is fully accredited by the Council for Education in Public Health (CEPH), and it offers numerous degree programs including Bachelor of Arts/Science in Public Health (BA/BS), Master of Public Health (MPH), Master of Science (MS), MS in Clinical and Translational Science (MS-CTS), Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA), Doctor of Public Health (DrPH), and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), along with certificate programs, MPH joint/dual degree programs, and MD/MS-CTS and MD/PhD dual degree programs.

UIC SPH consistently ranks among the top 20 public health programs in the nation (ranked 17th nationally in the 2023 U.S. News & World Report). UIC SPH is one of 16 colleges at UIC, and part of the 7-college health sciences campus. UIC SPH received the second most research funding of all UIC colleges, with $54 million in funding for fiscal year 2023. Nearly $38.9 million of that funding came from federal sources, primarily the National Institutes of Health. For more than 50 years, UIC SPH has prepared public health practitioners, researchers, academic faculty, policymakers, and activists whose work positively affects health and well-being in communities that are diverse with respect to race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, sexual orientation, nationality, and religion.

HPA, one of the four Divisions in UIC SPH, is an interprofessional, transdisciplinary group of educators, researchers, practitioners, students, and staff dedicated to seeking solutions to real-world problems and improving people’s lives in Chicago and around the world. Much of what we teach and undertake as research is focused on tackling the underlying drivers of health inequity in order to formulate evidence-based policies to help promote health equity. HPA represents a variety of disciplines, including public policy, health economics, health services, political science, psychology, organizational behavior, public health management, public health informatics, public health practice, and law.
