The School of Visual Arts and Design (SVAD), in the College of Arts and Humanities (CAH), at the University of Central Florida (UCF) invites applications for a nine-month, tenure-earning assistant professor or tenured associate professor position which will include teaching, research, and service-based duties. The faculty member will also contribute to the Character Animation program and advise with course scheduling and other matters related to the program (e.g., assessment, curriculum development, and policies). Research and teaching responsibilities include contributing to the mission of Emerging Media in appropriate areas of scholarship, mentoring junior faculty and graduate students, and working at the intersection of theory and practice. The anticipated start date is August 2022.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong understanding and application of the principles of animation. Core areas will include animation, modeling and texturing, digital illustration, rendering and compositing, animation production, development and design, concept art, and a strong understanding of the moving image. Faculty will teach courses supporting the Emerging Media BFA and the Emerging Media MFA Animation and Visual Effects track.

Minimum Qualifications:

For an assistant professor: Applicants must hold an MFA or other terminal degree in an appropriate discipline from an accredited institution. Appropriate disciplines include digital art, graphic design, illustration, film, animation, fine arts, or a media-related discipline. Ideal candidates must demonstrate evidence of an emerging national or international reputation through research or creative work in a relevant area of animation. The candidate must also possess technical experience in industry-standard software. Candidates must have previous teaching experience at the university level.

For an associate professor: Applicants must hold an MFA or other terminal degree in an appropriate discipline from an accredited institution. Appropriate disciplines include digital art, graphic design, illustration, film, animation, fine arts, or a media-related discipline. Ideal candidates must demonstrate evidence of a national or international reputation through research or creative work in a relevant area of animation. The candidate must also possess significant technical experience in industry-standard software and a track record of successful academic leadership. Candidates must have a minimum of five years of previous teaching experience. A professional and academic background commensurate with a record tenurable at UCF is required for the rank of associate professor.

 

Preferences:

  • Candidates with a minimum of five years of production experience.
  • Candidates who have teaching experience in one or more diverse sets of software packages such as Autodesk Maya, Toon Boom, Adobe Creative Cloud, and other relevant modeling/animation software.
  • Candidates who have teaching experience at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • A strong understanding and application of traditional and digital 2-D animation, 3-D animation, and the animation production pipeline.
  • Candidates who can show evidence of being a theorist and practitioner, with a demonstrated sustainable research agenda related to digital arts and animation.
