JOB SUMMARY

Ottawa University Nursing Program invites candidates for a full-time, 12-month Nursing Faculty position. The faculty member is committed to academic excellence in all areas of teaching and learning including theory, laboratory, and clinical instruction. Must demonstrate success through instruction, advising, program development, community participation, and active engagement within the discipline. Responsible for contributing to Ottawa’s educational programming and academic integrity, including interaction and support with enrollment, academic, and finance advising as needed to help adult learners be successful in the face-to-face and/or online programs The position reports to the Director of Nursing.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teaching Load: 10 courses per year (with the potential addition of two directed studies or small courses*). Teach a combination of courses in the discipline (both for students majoring in the discipline and for students meeting Breadth Area (general education) requirements), interdisciplinary and/or team-taught courses, and courses approved as part of the Liberal Arts core program. This combination of courses is to be determined in collaboration among the School Dean, Department Chair, and individual faculty, according to unit and university requirements.
  • Teaching Standards: Maintain a high standard in online teaching through engaging and effective pedagogy, exhibiting awareness and understanding of best practices in post secondary education through application in the online classroom, and remaining current with issues, curriculum, and online course approaches in both the liberal arts and the candidate’s academic discipline.
  • Advising: Attend to student needs and concerns, and work with each student’s advising team members to identify and develop opportunities for each individual learner. Collaborate as needed in scheduling courses, addressing academic concerns, and supporting efforts in retention.
  • Scholarship:  Maintain awareness of contemporary trends and evolving knowledge within one’s academic discipline and in the liberal arts through research, creative work, writing, conference attendance (either virtually or at designated location), public presentations (in-person and virtually), and other involvement in the regional and national community of higher education professionals
  • Service:

Participate with faculty in governance issues related to curriculum and course development and revisions, including review of adjunct syllabi as assigned.

Collaborate as needed in scheduling courses and addressing academic concerns (such as, but not limited to, serving on an academic grievance committee)

Contribute to recruitment and retention efforts for unit growth and sustainability

Participate in the interviewing process, orientation, mentoring, and development of new faculty and adjunct faculty as needed.

Participate in Campus and University-wide governance in responding to and engaging in dialogue related to academic issues across the university.

Participate in Campus and University-wide committee work, including on-going committees, program assessments, task-oriented committees or task forces, and other projects or committees as requested

  • Assessment: Maintain effective curricula through participation in university-wide assessment processes.

REQUIRED EDUCATION: (education based on essential job duties and requirements consistent with business necessity):
Earned Doctorate preferred. Master’s Degree required

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE: (experience based on requirements in role and are consistent with business necessity)

Three years of higher education experience in an adult or non-traditional setting is preferred.

  • Ability to be flexible in adjusting to and responding to both student and local university needs and concerns; and
  • Proven interpersonal and communication skills.
