Lawrence Technological University, having newly established its fifth college, seeks a dynamic and experienced leader to serve as the founding Dean of the College of Health Sciences. The successful candidate must have the experience and vision to inspire, guide, and facilitate a strong and diverse faculty in the advancement of high-quality teaching, research, service, and extension while providing leadership that assures the integrity, excellence, and relevance and success of the College’s multi-faceted programs for the 21st century. Current programs offered include BS in Nursing, Masters in PA studies, Master of Cardiovascular Perfusion, and Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA). With the initial success of the College, discussions are underway for the development of both new and expansion of existing programs.

 

This position is ideal for a cutting edge, student-centric leader with a proven history of successful growth initiatives, strong partnership and collaboration skills, and results-focused leadership. The founding Dean will be required to sustain and grow the College of Health Science’s excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service; promote a team-oriented leadership approach; establish a vision and strategic direction; drive further development and growth in enrollment, disciplines, and degrees; and cultivate internal and external partnerships. LTU supports an innovative and creative culture, as such candidates can come from a variety of backgrounds including healthcare, health sciences, as well as business backgrounds with healthcare credentials.

 

Reporting to the Provost, the Dean of the College of Health Sciences is the senior administrator and chief academic officer of the College of Health Sciences who provides vision, leadership, and support to the College. The Dean is a part of the University’s academic leadership team, working in collaboration with the Provost and other Deans and administrative units. The Dean’s primary responsibility is to advance the mission of the College and the University with an emphasis on teaching, learning, and applied research, to develop a vision for the College and the strategic steps necessary to achieve that vision, and to skillfully manage faculty and staff charged with the responsibility of implementing the College’s strategic plan by embracing a team environment.

Additional key responsibilities of the position are to build and manage enrollment in the College and to build constituencies and alliances within the University, working with colleagues in a spirit of collaboration, partnership, transparency, and fiscal responsibility, to build connections and interactions with and within professional organizations, health-related professions, business and industry, and other constituencies in the community to extend the College’s outreach, and to increase its reputation and provide opportunities for involvement with students and faculty.

 

This position reports directly to the Provost.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

The Dean is responsible for advancing the College and University Mission by providing leadership to the following activities:

  • Lead in the development and implementation of the College’s strategic plan, taking full advantage of the opportunity to strengthen internal relationships among programs and departments, collaborate with other University units and engage alumni, health-related professions, business, and industry through projects connected to the community and outreach.
  • Lead faculty and staff in continuously seeking ways to utilize innovative technology to enhance the operation and mission of the College and to continuously improve the quality of teaching and learning.
  • Manage the College’s enrollment, advancing strategies for recruitment and retention of undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Coordinate the development of new and existing academic programs, certification opportunities, and applied research development.
  • Develop strong, collaborative relationships with other disciplines, foster interdisciplinary, collaborative applied research, and develop local and international partnerships.
  • Lead the College’s fund development efforts, working with the University Office of Philanthropy and Alumni Affairs, to garner gifts and grants from public and private entities and individuals.
  • Support the funding of the College’s applied research efforts, working with the University Office of Research, to garner grants and awards to assist in funding faculty research.
  • Establish sound financial policies consistent with the university financial policies.
  • Develop strong, transparent interactions with the College’s Advisory Board for guidance in academic and professional programming and opportunities for support.
  • Provide for and facilitate the advancement and professional development of faculty and staff including enhancement of the quality of teaching, learning, and advising.
  • Represent the College and University effectively in all professional and public forums.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Appropriate administrative and academic experience.
  • A strong record of achievement in research, teaching, and/or extension which merits appointment as a tenured, full professor in one of the College’s departments.
  • Track record of participation and leadership in professional and academic associations.
  • Sufficient business experience to engage the professional community.
  • Proven skills in vision, creativity, leadership, scholarship, enrollment management, academic quality, faculty development, fund-raising, sponsored research, and community and alumni engagement.
  • Proven success as an innovative and strategic leader with the ability to plan, coordinate, articulate, and execute a strategic vision and initiatives while engaging others.
  • Demonstrated success as a strategic and creative planner and an outstanding collaborator and relationship builder with exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Doctoral or terminal degree in field of expertise.
  • Demonstrated success in fund development, external fundraising, and financial management.

OTHER SKILLS, ABILITIES and QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Individuals should possess significant personnel management, curriculum development, fund raising, instructional, coaching/counseling/conflict resolution, and change management skills. Individuals should also possess the ability to represent the College and University effectively in educational, governmental, business and alumni, and public and professional forums.
  • Individuals should possess knowledge of leadership concepts and applications, motivation concepts and applications, third-party contract negotiation and management, including development of requests for proposals, and knowledge current with emerging trends in technology, graduate business, online and other forms of non-traditional education.
  • Ability to read, comprehend and compose complex instructions, short, and complex correspondences. Ability to effectively present information one‑on‑one and/or in small group situations to professors, students, and other employees of the organizations, as well as individuals and groups external to the University, especially in the health-related professions.  Must possess exceptional interpersonal and relationship building skills required.
  • Exceptional analytic/evaluation skills required. Incumbents should possess basic database development and database management skills, computer skills using word processing, database and spreadsheet software, and budget management skills. Possession of skills in qualitative and quantitative methods and tools for analysis, interpretation, and decision-making purposes (for example, metrics and measurements, cost/benefit analysis, financial statement analysis)
  • Superior planning and organizing ability is required. Ability to comprehend and resolved complex interpersonal and organizational problems is essential. The ability to plan and work independently as well as in teams is essential. Incumbents will possess both strong analytical skills and sound instincts to complement programming and service delivery.
