Job Summary:
The Department of Theatre and Dance at Cleveland State University invites applications for an Assistant College Lecturer beginning August 21, 2023. Duties include teaching introductory through advanced technique in modern dance and other classes as needed; direct the CSU dance company including choreography, rehearsals, production and performance, and supervise outreach activities. Director of Dance responsibilities include planning, implementing, and staffing dance course offerings and dance programming in conjunction with the Department Chair.

 

Additional expectations include advising and mentoring students as well as developing curriculum and community programs. The ability to contribute through creative work, teaching, service and advancement of diversity, cultural sensitivity, and excellence in teaching is an expectation of all CSU faculty.

Dance at CSU:

The mission of the dance program at Cleveland State University is to make dance accessible to all students and the surrounding community, from novice to professional. Students have the chance to explore a comprehensive curriculum and perform in the CSU Dance Company, as well as learn works by nationally renowned dance artists. Centered in an active dance community, there are many opportunities for engaged learning experiences and to network within the professional community via master classes and workshops including programming with GroundWorks Dance Theater, CSU’s professional dance company in residence. Additionally, the historic CSU Summer Dance Workshop brings in renowned dance artists, representing diverse forms for intensive study, performances, and seminars. The Dance Program emphasizes the art of individuals and ensembles as well as the power of dance for community well-being.

The dance program is housed within the Department of Theatre Dance which resides in the nationally recognized Cleveland Playhouse Square district. The department boasts beautiful, state of the art dance studios and performance venues in the Allen Theater Complex.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

·       MA in dance or related field;

·       A background of professional creative activity;

·       Two years of prior teaching experience at the university level; and

·       The ability to manage dance curriculum, programming and activities.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

·       MFA in dance;

·       A strong background of professional creative activity;

·       Five years of proven excellence in teaching at the university level;

·       Previous experience developing, supervising, and coordinating dance programming which includes production, collaborations with other disciplines across the university, partnerships with professional groups, and community outreach activities; and

·       The ability to teach several of the following is desirable: dance pedagogy, dance appreciation, composition, and a somatic discipline.
