Job Description

Minimum Qualifications:

The minimum education requirement for appointment to the Mechanical or Mechatronic Engineering faculty position is a Ph.D. in mechanical or mechatronic engineering or a closely related field. Candidates nearing completion of the degree may be considered; however, all requirements for conferral of the degree must be met no later than the start date of the position. The minimum education requirement for appointment to the Advanced Manufacturing faculty position is a master’s degree in engineering or a closely related field. The minimum required degree must be conferred by no later than the start date of the position. Mechanical Engineering candidates must have expertise in the area of thermal/fluid sciences. Mechatronic Engineering candidates must have expertise in the integration of mechanical and electrical systems. Advanced Manufacturing candidates must have expertise in advanced manufacturing. Candidates for all positions must have a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching and proficiency in written and oral English.

Responsibilities:

All tenure track positions carry responsibilities in the areas of teaching and course development at the undergraduate level (this is primary). Other responsibilities include: Develop an area of scholarship and professional growth leading to dissemination through peer-reviewed forums, pursue external funding to support research, and mentor undergraduate students on research. Student advising, serving on academic committees and industry associations, supporting the Department’s industrial advisory board, engaging in outreach and recruitment activities, and contributing to goals of the Program, College, and University. This position includes advising capstone senior design teams, which involves working closely with students and industry sponsors. Teaching assignments are based upon qualifications of the individual and the needs of the department.

The Department:

The Department of MMEM offers B.S. degree programs in Mechanical Engineering (365 current majors), Mechatronic Engineering (154 current majors), and Advanced Manufacturing and Applied Robotics (30 current majors). The engineering programs are accredited by ABET. The Department also offers a minor in Advanced Manufacturing (18 current minors). It is one of seven departments in the College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Construction Management (ECC).

The department prides itself in maintaining rigorous curricula, delivering programs that are practice-oriented with a strong design focus, and having accessible faculty who provide a high degree of personal attention to students. A major strength of the department is the Capstone Design Program in which all three degree programs participate. The department manages about thirty industry-sponsored capstone design projects each year. The department has several active student chapters that include the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), American Institute of Mechatronic Engineers (AIME), Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME), Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE), and the Materials Research Society (MRS). The department also supports several student clubs and extracurricular competitions such as SAE Baja, SAE Formula, Rocketry, and the Solar Regatta.
