This is an exciting opportunity to serve as the Spangler Distinguished Professor of Early Literacy at a strong and growing R2 high research activity institution moving towards becoming an R1 very high research activity institution. The successful candidate will be an experienced academic leader ready to join a growing academic enterprise on the cutting edge of discovery, learning, and engagement. This is a well-supported position offering a very generous start up package.

The Spangler Distinguished Professor of Literacy’s primary responsibility is supporting the College’s vision of culturally responsive literacy to support the achievement of reading proficiency by North Carolina’s children. The Distinguished Professor will work in the College of Education, Department of Educator Preparation to advance evidence-based practices in reading instruction aligned with the University of North Carolina System Literacy Framework, and to expand continuing support for teachers of reading. The Distinguished Professor will have the opportunity to collaborate with faculty across the College, engage in Practice-Based Teacher Education with the N.C. A&T Laboratory School, Aggie Academy, and contribute to the forthcoming Center of Excellence for Educational Equity Research.

 

The Spangler Distinguished Professor of Literacy will join three other distinguished professors in the UNC System to serve as a network of early literacy experts with the purpose of advancing the state of North Carolina’s literacy initiatives through engaging in outreach and dissemination of best practice. The Spangler Distinguished Professors may serve on statewide literacy committees in an advisory capacity to elevate how UNC System institutions are ensuring the development of well-prepared teachers of reading. In addition, the cadre of professors will enhance partnerships with school districts across North Carolina to foster collaboration between teacher education programs and current teachers in the field.

 

Lastly, the Distinguished Professor will maintain scholarly productivity in research; seek external funds to support research activities; teach undergraduate and graduate students; mentor faculty; provide service to the field and profession; and participate in programmatic development of the college and literacy initiatives at the institution, local, state, national, and international levels.

 

This tenure track position is open to Associate or full Professor level.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

The Spangler Distinguished Professor of Literacy will:

 

  • Maintain scholarly productivity in research;
  • Seek external funds to support research activities;
  • Teach undergraduate and graduate students;
  • Mentor faculty;
  • Provide service to the field and profession;
  • And participate in programmatic development of the college and literacy initiatives at the institution, local, state, national, and international levels.

The College of Education comprises three departments: the Department of Counseling, the Department of Leadership Studies and Adult Education, and the Department of Educator Preparation. The Department of Educator Preparation’s programs are accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). The Department of Counseling’s programs are accredited by the Council Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).

 

The Primary Function of the Department of Educator Preparation:

The Department of Educator Preparation in the College of Education offers undergraduate and graduate programs designed to prepare teacher candidates for initial or advanced licensure.

The Department of Educator Preparation at North Carolina A&T is comprised of professional educators committed to teaching and learning in a pluralistic global society by creating responsive learning environments that challenge students to think critically, collaborate, communicate, and serve mankind. Our faculty provides high quality programs through research, effective teaching, field experiences, internships, and ongoing formative assessments.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

 

The Department of Educator Preparation programs strive to accomplish the following goals:

  1. To provide candidates with a quality educational program at the bachelor’s and master’s degree level that satisfies requirements for licensure and accreditation.
  2. To prepare candidates to think critically, to express themselves effectively, to collect data and draw appropriate conclusions, and to utilize their proficiencies to become a catalyst for learning.
  3. To recruit quality candidates from diverse backgrounds, to retain them through quality programming and supportive resources, and to graduate them with the proficiencies required to function successfully in 21st Century learning environments.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

We seek a candidate who is committed to advancing equity, access, and advocacy work in education with the following qualifications:

  1. Candidates must have an earned doctorate in Elementary Education, Reading/Literacy, Curriculum and Instruction, Special Education, or a closely related field from an accredited university.
  2. Candidate must currently hold a faculty rank of Associate Professor or Full Professor.
  3. Candidates must have an established record of securing external funding, and an extensive record of research productivity in literacy.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Candidate holds or has the ability to obtain a North Carolina Teaching license
  2. Reading Certification, K-12
