Biology: Assistant Professor in Immunology
The Department of Biology invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin August 21st, 2023. The department seeks a broadly trained candidate with demonstrated expertise in applying cellular and/or molecular approaches to the study of immunology.  Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in infectious disease immunology and/or molecular mechanisms of immune system function. Candidates must be committed to excellence in undergraduate instruction and embrace the department and university commitments to equity, diversity, and inclusion. The successful candidate will contribute to a vibrant cell, molecular, and microbiology curriculum by teaching both introductory and upper-level courses in the areas of immunology, virology, cell biology and molecular biology as well as courses focused on the intersection of human health and immunology. The successful candidate will provide new research experiences for undergraduates in immunology.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Earned Ph.D. by August 21, 2023 and demonstrated interest in joining a department that values excellence in teaching undergraduates, collaborative research with undergraduates, and engagement in inclusion and diversity efforts.

DUTIES: The successful candidate will teach both introductory and upper-level biology courses for majors (such as Foundations of Biology I and Cell & Molecular Biology) as well as offer upper-level coursework related to their expertise (such as Virology and Immunology). The candidate will also have opportunities to develop courses at the intersection of human health and immunology that complement our current curriculum. The teaching commitment is approximately 12 contact hours per week. The successful candidate will also be expected to develop an active research program involving undergraduate students, provide academic advising to students (in collaboration with Advising, Retention, and Career Center) and engage in service to the Department, College, University, profession and/or community.  Opportunities also exist for contribution to collaborative and growing interdisciplinary high impact experiences among STEM departments as well as collaboration with Mayo Clinic Health System partners.

DEPARTMENT: The Department of Biology currently has 15 faculty, 3 instructors, a lab manager, a greenhouse/animal care manager, and approximately 700 Biology majors including 100 Biochemistry/Molecular Biology majors. Department members are dedicated to teaching and are actively involved in research with undergraduates as demonstrated by co-authored presentations and publications. The Department is affiliated with the Institute for Health Sciences on campus, which is a consortium of academic departments and programs that support the advancement and visibility of the pre-professional and professional health science programs.

Departmental facilities include a variety of teaching and research laboratories, standard cell and molecular instrumentation, equipment and facilities for cell culture, gel and blot documentation systems, a real-time PCR system, a flow cytometer and shared access to conventional and confocal fluorescence microscopes and transmission and scanning electron microscopes. In addition, we have three greenhouses and an animal care facility.

Research is supported by competitive start-up packages as well as both external and internal grants. The professional development, attendance at meetings, and high impact experiences for students are also supported with internal funds.
