Job Description

Goshen College invites application for a full-time appointment as an Assistant or Associate Professor of Sustainability and Environmental Education, starting July 2022. This appointment includes serving as the Program Director for the Master of Arts in Environmental Education program, based at the college’s Merry Lea Environmental Learning Center.

This position supports the academic mission of Goshen College and Merry Lea by teaching undergraduate and graduate courses related to sustainability and environmental education. Additionally, the successful candidate will provide ongoing leadership for the Master of Arts in Environmental Education (MAEE). As MAEE Program Director, the successful applicant leads ongoing curriculum development and delivery, oversees the recruitment and admission of graduate students, supports the progress of students through the program, assists with planning and budget development, and collaborates with other institutions of higher education and professional organizations as applicable. A portion of the contract time is allocated for ongoing faculty research, with other opportunities available in non-contract periods. The academic focus of this position is in the field of environmental and/or sustainability education. A doctorate in a field of environmental education, administration, or closely related areas is required.

In addition to the MAEE, the department offers majors in Sustainability Studies and Sustainable Food Systems, and minors in the same areas. We also collaborate frequently with colleagues across campus in many departments. Merry Lea is a field station of a liberal arts college, so the students we work with tend to be highly motivated, but also often are in small cohorts. Thus we value robust collaboration within our faculty team and also with students, and we will prioritize candidates who have demonstrated interest and creativity around interdisciplinary collaboration and coalition-building. A history of collaborative grants (whether federal, foundation-based, or elsewise) would be a strong indicator of that capability. Lastly, as we seek to inspire future educators, someone who is them-self a strong and passionate educator is deeply desired.

Goshen College is a teaching-focused college, and all teaching faculty serve on institution-wide committees and assist with advising, as well as help to recruit prospective students. The successful candidate must be ready to contribute to our strong tradition of excellence in research and publication as well as teaching. The college has a robust history of international education programs, and opportunities exist to teach short-term classes internationally as well.

Successful candidates should be able to teach such courses as Principles of Environmental Education , International Environmental Education  (part of a partnership in the Bahamas), or Field Experiences in Environmental Education. Other possible topics would be in the candidate’s area of expertise and may include such courses as: Sustainability & Regeneration, Faith, Peacemaking, and the Environment, and other new courses that the candidate and the department may wish to develop.

Minimum Qualifications

Completed Doctoral degree with expertise in an area of environmental and/or  sustainability education.
Previous experience in administration of an academic program.

Skills

Collaborative, innovative teacher-scholars dedicated to undergraduate teaching in an inclusive academic and campus community.
Excellent aptitude and ability in teaching and educational technology
Mentorship of student research
Active engagement in research and publishing
Public speaking and public relations
Interest in community collaboration and service
Ability to establish positive working relationships with colleagues and students
Contribute knowledge and ideas to department and college endeavors
