Job Description

The Long School of Medicine (LSOM) is seeking a Chair of the Department of Medical Education (DME). The role of this position is to build and guide a successful academic department that conducts and promotes research in medical education, facilitates the translation of educational research into educational best practices ultimately benefitting learners and patients, and promotes teaching and learning excellence plus innovation across the continuum of LSOM medical education. This leadership position involves frequent high-level interaction and collaboration with campus and LSOM leaders across the full range of educational intersections, promoting the science of teaching and learning and meeting the educational needs of LSOM faculty, trainees and staff. The DME Chair is a full-time faculty position that reports directly to the LSOM Dean.

Job Responsibilities:

  • With the LSOM Dean and the Vice Dean for Finance, devise a strategic plan for the department with a mission-aligned budget that is managed responsibly and updated annually.
  • Manage the Col. Janice A. Mendelson MD Endowment for Program Development in Medical Education.
  • Identify and obtainexternal funding and philanthropic opportunities to support the DME.
  • Oversee all DME operational activities in medical education, including supporting research, faculty development, program development, process improvement across the education spectrum, and optimizing the application of technology to biomedical education.
  • Provide consultation to advise educational program design, development and implementation, and to infuse quality measures and continuous improvement as standards. Examples include customizing faculty development programs in teaching and education, and developing quality improvement diagnostics and skills’ remediation programs for teaching faculty.
  • Collaborate with the Vice Dean and other leadership of the Office for Graduate Medical Education to advise new educational initiatives, promote innovation in educational scholarship, and ensure continuation of the ACGME/Texas Regional Hub program on faculty development in competency-based assessment
  • Collaborate with the Vice Dean and other leadership of the Office for Undergraduate Medical Education to advise new educational initiatives and current program updates, including programs that enhance educational research, curriculum and teaching innovation, the educational expertise of UME teaching faculty, and UME students’ educational experience.
  • Collaborate with the Dean of the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences to advise new educational initiatives, and promote innovative teaching programs, educational quality, and the use of novel technology.
  • Serve as a member of the LSOM Academy of Educational Scholars (AES) Directorship to steward AES activities and initiatives.
  • Establish a junior faculty member mentorship program in educational scholarship and academic medicine career development.
  • Recruit a Director of Research in Medical Education to expand medical education research throughout the LSOM, and to address department-level educational research needs.
  • Collaborate with the Associate Dean for Quality and Lifelong Learning/Continuing Medical Education to enhance program evaluation, educational scholarship, and innovation in faculty continuing education.
  • Required Qualifications:
  • A doctoral degree with preference toward holding an MD or DO degree
  • A significant record of success in:
    • leadership roles in academic medical education, preferably at a school of medicine
    • leadership roles in national organizations focused on medical education
    • medical education research and scholarly achievement demonstrated by national recognition and presentations at biomedical education-related meetings and by peer- reviewed publications in respected medical education journals
    • Substantial knowledge and experience regarding competency-based medical education, faculty development, program evaluation, instructional design, learner assessment, and educational technology.
    • Well-developed leadership, interpersonal communication, and team-building skills
    • Competence in time management such as managing multiple projects simultaneously for different stakeholders and meeting project deadlines
    • Ability to work well both independently and collaboratively in a diverse and rapid-paced academic medical environment
