Library Web Developer
The Claremont Colleges Services (TCCS) is the central coordinating and support organization for a highly regarded cluster of seven independent colleges known as The Claremont Colleges. TCCS, with about 300 staff members, provides exceptional shared services to 9,000 students, and almost 3,600 faculty and staff. TCCS staff work in both student-facing services as well as administrative and operational services. Our numerous departments are located throughout The Claremont Colleges campus in the beautiful city of Claremont, California.
ABOUT THE POSITION:
The Library Web Developer is solely responsible for the development, design and collaborative integration of The Claremont Colleges Library website with related systems/platforms to maintain and elevate the Library’s online presence as both a point of service and communications platform. This requires design and customization of the user interface of library-specific Software-as-Service digital asset management platforms, web-based information management systems, and discovery tools; and the integration of web applications such as the reservation system, digital signage software, social media and more. The ideal candidate is able to lead these initiatives while productively collaborating with members of the organization and campus community, including the Library’s leadership team, key stakeholders, and users in order to create an innovative, visually appealing, and intuitive website and public facing library platforms and systems.
Reporting to the Associate Director, Library Communications & Outreach, this position will work closely with a wide range of key collaborators across the Library, TCCS, and the seven institutions that make up The Claremont Colleges consortium to meet the research, teaching and learning needs of faculty, students and staff. Primary responsibilities include strategic management of the Library’s website; contributing to customizations of, and integrations with, Library systems and platforms on a project basis; identifying and recommending best practices in digital user experience; and other related tasks.
Priority Deadline: The deadline for first consideration is March 20, 2024.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following are the fundamental duties and responsibilities of this position which the incumbent must be able to perform to fulfill the purpose and requirements of this position.
Website Updates and Improvements:
• Designs and integrates Library branding and current website best practices into the Library website, platforms and systems.
• Continuously improves web accessibility to exceed established standards.
• Works with supervisor and other Library staff on content updates as needed, including managing the overall workflow of such updates.
• Implements user testing to evaluate user needs, behaviors, preferences, and trends as needed.
• Selects existing or creates new plugins, Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) and User Interface (UI) frameworks to extend and enhance the user experience.
• Implements robust and adaptable tools and workflows for gathering user traffic and experience analytics.
• Handles website management from a service philosophy with an emphasis on collaboration with and responsiveness to internal stakeholders while addressing external stakeholder needs.
Website Maintenance and Security:
• Ensures that the Library website and all user web applications comply with secure coding standards and maintain a secure environment.
• Tests, debugs and troubleshoots utilizing the appropriate technology.
• Creates and documents workflows and best practices as relates to upkeep, revisions to content, design, and functionality of library website, systems and platforms.
Other Website-Related Duties:
• Stays up-to-date on website trends, advancements and best practices to help ensure that the Library’s website is modern, relevant, and engaging for all users.
• In partnership with supervisor, heads up a range of Library website-related projects and initiatives (e.g. implementing new online engagement tools; managing a website redesign) while collaborating with identified stakeholders as needed.
• Serves on Library, TCCS, and Claremont Colleges’ committees and interest groups, as assigned.
• Maintains relationships with the Library Leadership Team and Library divisions to implement strategic decisions and recommendations that ensure the Library website continues to perform in its capacity as both a point of service and communications tool.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Training:
• Bachelor’s degree in web development, web design, computer science, communications, or related discipline; or an equivalent amount of experience and education.
Experience:
• Three to five (3-5) years of experience with WordPress, including installation, configuration and site implementation and/or site redesign.
• Intermediate level Experience with selecting, evaluating and debugging WordPress plugins, and developing new custom code when no existing plugin precisely fulfills a particular need.
• Working Experience coordinating with outside vendors, subcontractors and/or consultants on projects.
Competencies:
• Strong communication skills and problem-solving abilities, including the ability to communicate with users of varying technological backgrounds.
• Ability to work independently and prioritize in a fast-paced and changing environment.
• Demonstrated experience with Python, SQL, PHP or other backend development languages.
• Demonstrated experience with JavaScript, CSS3, HTML5.
• Knowledge of responsive design principles.
• Understanding of mobile design UX/UI.
• Demonstrated experience in Web Accessibility Standards and Application.
• Deep knowledge of user-centered design processes and methodologies.
• Ability to collaborate with internal and external stakeholders.
• Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
• Ability to proactively learn and support new systems and applications.
• Ability to meet assigned deadlines.
• Ability to work harmoniously and contribute to a thriving team-based environment that fosters collaboration and the ability to understand and contribute to higher-level strategic initiatives.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Knowledge of integrating WordPress with Library platforms such as Springshare and Single Sign-On systems such as Shibboleth.
• Familiarity with agile development methodologies.
• Experience managing web/digital/technical projects (or related experience).
• Experience with relational databases.
• Experience developing RESTful APIs
• Experience with test-driven development.
• Experience with web application automated testing.
Work Schedule: The regular hours for this full-time position are 40 hours scheduled from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday for 12 months annually. May be required to work holiday, weekend, and/or evening hours. Regular hours may vary due to the needs of the organization or business unit. This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule to work partial hours remotely as approved by the supervisor.
Union: This position is represented by The Claremont Colleges Services Library Staff Federation AFT Local 6735. The employee in this position will be bound by the collective bargaining agreement.
COMPENSATION
Pay: The pay rate for this position is commensurate with the qualifications required for the position, from $5,833.33 – $6,416.67 monthly.
