TENURE TRACK POSITION IN PRE-1900 U.S. HISTORY/AFRICAN DIASPORA AND THE ATLANTIC WORLD
Scripps College, a women’s liberal arts college with a strong interdisciplinary tradition, invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor in U.S. history before 1900, with research and teaching expertise in the African diaspora and the Atlantic world, beginning in the academic year 2024-5. Candidates whose research and teaching interests also address gender and sexuality are especially encouraged to apply. The position is shared by the Intercollegiate Department of Africana Studies and the Scripps Department of History. The successful candidate will offer courses in both departments and be expected to teach in the college’s Core Curriculum in Interdisciplinary Humanities program. The teaching load is 2/2.
Ph.D. in History or Africana Studies with a historical emphasis required by position start date. Evidence of teaching experience and teaching excellence are also required. Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to the college’s goal of improving higher education for underrepresented students. Towards that end, applicants should submit a brief (one page) statement on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).
Applicants should submit the following materials online at http://apply.interfolio.com/125936: cover letter, CV, the names of three references, article- or chapter-length writing sample, DEI statement, and teaching portfolio (including two sample syllabi and evidence of teaching experience and excellence). Letters of recommendation will be requested for short-listed candidates. For matters other than the submission of materials, contact Professor Andrew Aisenberg, Chair, History Search Committee, at aaisenbe@scrippscollege.edu. Review of applications will begin October 1 and continue until the position is filled.
The salary for this position will range from $75,384 to $83,760 and will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training.
Scripps College is one of seven members of The Claremont Colleges consortium located 35 miles east of Los Angeles. In keeping with its ongoing commitment to build and support a diverse and equitable academic community, Scripps College actively encourages applications from women and members of historically under-represented groups. Preference will be given to applicants committed to improving higher education for underrepresented students.
