Job Description

Grand Valley State University seeks an Assistant or Associate Professor in Secondary Education. Applicants must have a Doctorate in Education or closely related field by August 1, 2023. We seek candidates from a diverse pool of scholars with expertise (teaching and research) willing to assist with the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of secondary education curriculum in our programs. Additionally, applicants must have: specialized knowledge of theory and pedagogy practices related to secondary education; a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion; a minimum of three years of successful teaching in 5th-12th grade classrooms; effective oral, written, and collaborative interpersonal skills; demonstrated potential for teaching at the university level; a record of scholarship or potential for scholarship; and ability to teach in multiple modalities and locations.

Required Qualifications and Education:

  • Doctorate in Education or a closely related field. ABD Candidates will be considered if doctoral degree is completed before August 1, 2023;
  • Specialized knowledge of theory and pedagogy practices related to secondary education;
  • Demonstrated potential for teaching at the university level;
  • Record of relevant scholarship or evidence of an emerging research agenda in secondary education or related field;
  • Willingness and ability to teach courses in an online or hybrid format, as well as traditionally, on weekends, and/or other non-traditional times;
  • Willingness and ability to travel for instruction and student supervision;
  • Effective oral, written, and collaborative interpersonal skills;
  • Minimum of 3 years of successful teaching in 5th-12th grade classrooms;
  • Demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Preferred Qualifications and Education: 

  • Evidence of student-centered and relationship-centered teaching;
  • Demonstrate commitment to teaching with an intersectional lens;
  • Record of quality teaching at undergraduate and/or graduate levels;
  • Demonstrate engagement with or interest in using a variety of pedagogies that consider multiple forms of oppression (based on race, class, gender, sexual orientation, physical ability/disability, neurodiversity, etc.);
  • Engagement in collaborative endeavors with colleagues (e.g., research, teaching, curriculum development, etc.);
  • Ability to coordinate field-based experiences;
  • Experience with using various modalities of instruction including face-to-face, online synchronous, asynchronous, hybrid, and distance learning technologies.
