Founded in 1959 on the traditional territory of the Anishinabek Nation, the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, and the Huron-Wendat, York University is Canada’s third-largest university and is a leading interdisciplinary research and teaching institution. York is proud of the unparalleled vibrant diversity of our student population, which mirrors that of the Greater Toronto Area and includes students from across Canada and around the world. We are a community of over 60,000 faculty, staff and students, and over 325,000 alumni worldwide, all building unique paths to success but united through commitment to creating positive change through learning, research, innovation and community engagement.
Osgoode Hall Law School, founded in 1889, is one of Canada’s largest and most respected law schools and a centre of influential legal research and thinking. Our students, teachers and scholars share the goals of advancing justice in a world where rights are often contested and supporting the rule of law. Throughout Osgoode’s long history, we’ve always seen the practice of law as more than a means to an end. Home to more than 60 faculty, over 1,000 students, and over 15,000 alumni, the Osgoode community believes that the rich, innovative and accessible legal education Osgoode provides will empower our graduates to pursue flexible and challenging futures, to be leaders in the legal profession and to serve the cause of justice and make positive change. Our faculty will continue to excel in producing foundational, socially-engaged and world-leading academic scholarship, including through our seven research centres and institutes. The Law Library’s collection is one of the largest in the Commonwealth; it includes an institutional repository that captures, preserves and makes available globally faculty research, scholarship, publications and journals. Osgoode’s vibrant lifelong learning unit, Osgoode Professional Development, is the leading law school provider of professional graduate and continuing legal education in Canada. The School prides itself on its innovative curriculum and experiential education opportunities and actively seeks to strengthen funding and other initiatives to promote student access and success.
The Dean of Osgoode Hall Law School is the senior officer of the Faculty and a member of the University’s senior leadership team. Reporting to the Provost & Vice-President Academic, the Dean is responsible for all aspects of the Faculty’s operations, including strategic planning, budget and funds allocation and development, management of senior administrative staff, maintaining and enhancing strong and productive partnerships with external constituencies, and working collaboratively with this outstanding Faculty to achieve even greater levels of excellence. We seek a highly-respected leader with integrity who possesses qualifications and accomplishments suitable for a tenured appointment in the Faculty, has a proven track record of successful leadership, the ability to develop and promote a shared vision, a demonstrated desire to engage with students and a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, anti-racism, decolonization and reconciliation. Leadership experience obtained in the legal profession will be considered, but a strong understanding of, experience with and affinity for the post-secondary education sector is preferred. They must be a highly collaborative colleague inspired by the prospect of working with the broader York University community during an exciting phase of growth. They must possess a vision for emerging trends in legal education, a strong commitment to academic scholarship and research excellence, including legal-based inquiry, an ability to inspire innovation and excellence, and a demonstrated record of achievement in their field. The appointment is based on a five-year term, which is renewable, with an expected start date of July 1, 2023 or as agreed upon with the successful candidate.
