About the Institution

The mission of the Xavier University of Louisiana (XULA) Genetic Counseling Program is to recruit, welcome, respect, value, mentor, support, and train students in an atmosphere of academic excellence using an educational framework that integrates best practices in genetics and genetic counseling with perspectives of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion. Our vision is to be the leading ACGC-accredited program for recruiting and training genetic counseling graduate students with diverse and varied characteristics of identity. XULA Genetic Counseling Program graduates will be prepared to provide culturally competent genetic counseling services to people of diverse backgrounds and lead efforts to reduce health disparities.

Being America’s only Historically Black and Catholic University is just the first of the distinctions that have set Xavier University of Louisiana apart for more than nine decades. Despite its relatively small size (3,300 students), Xavier is a nationally recognized leader in the STEM and health sciences fields, producing more African American students who graduate from medical school each year than any other university in the United States. Its College of Pharmacy is also among the top producers of African American pharmacists.

Xavier’s liberal arts-based programs in areas such as art, business, education, psychology, and political science – as well as recent additions of bioinformatics, data science, neuroscience, crime and social justice and jazz studies – offer students an unbeatable combination of traditional classroom study, hands-on research, service-learning opportunities, and life experiences.

Both Xavier’s core and each discipline’s specific curriculum are guided intimately by the University’s mission such that students are developed to be life-long learners and global leaders that actively contribute to a more just and humane society for all. Not surprisingly, more than 30 percent of Xavier students go on to graduate or professional school.

Living in the Area

Xavier is located near the heart of New Orleans in a quiet neighborhood dotted with bungalows. An enclosed campus green mutes the urban feel of the encroaching city, and yellow brick buildings have been erected among the older historical limestone structures. Xavier was hard-hit in 2005 by Hurricane Katrina (much of the campus was underwater), but $130 million in renovations as well as the construction of the state-of-the-art Pharmacy Pavilion, Convocation Center, and St. Katharine Drexel Chapel, leave no traces of that tragic event.

With a population of 400,000 and a cost of living lower than the national average, New Orleans charms visitors and locals alike with its music scene, diverse cuisine, and refusal to abandon its cultural traditions. But what is truly wonderful about the Big Easy lies at its heart, beyond the casual tourists swaying Mardi Gras beads and late-night strolls down Bourbon Street. The residents of New Orleans are infused with a resilient and welcoming spirit that celebrates eccentricity.
