The School of Performing Arts (SPA) at Wichita State University (WSU) invites candidates to apply for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position focused on voice and diction, speech, dialects and acting. The academic appointment for this position will be for an Assistant Professor of Performing Arts effective August 6, 2023. We seek a colleague who can primarily enliven and expand our voice and diction, speech, dialects, and voice acting curriculum, with a focus on intersectional categories of performing arts, digital arts, and inclusive excellence. We welcome candidates with culturally diverse approaches to voice & acting practice and scholarship. Applicants must be committed to undergraduate education, to fostering an inclusive environment that reflects and implements the university’s strategic focus on diversity, and to promoting the success of underrepresented students.


The successful candidate will primarily create, teach, and lead as a colleague in the Theatre Program in the School of Performing Arts. Primary responsibilities include foundational courses in voice and diction, speech, dialects, voice acting and acting for the stage and/or screen. In addition, this position consists of student advising, curriculum development, recruitment, supervision of senior capstone projects, engagement in creative scholarship, and university service. Depending on the scholarship of the candidate, courses & collaborations may be created with other program areas, departments, and programs across both the college and the campus.


Required: Terminal degree in the discipline or equivalent professional experience; experience as a voice , speech, and dialect coach; demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion principles in the classroom, production, creative scholarship, and community; experience working with diverse students, including first-generation college students; demonstrated ability to teach voice and diction, speech, and dialects for actors; excellent written and verbal communication skills; willingness to accommodate a variety of learning styles and strategies in instructional delivery and learning activities, including online and blended learning, flexible teaching methods, and applied learning approaches.


Preferred: Doctoral degree in Acting, Directing, Theatre, or Performance Studies; experience teaching at full-time or equivalent course load in higher education; specialty certificate in voice (Linklater, Fitzmaurice, Skinner, Lessac, etc.); professional acting experience on the stage and/or in film; professional experience as a voice actor; experience directing contemporary theatre; background working with diverse student populations and multicultural curriculums; experience with acting/performance for and with film and digital media (e.g., Screen Acting, Self-Tests, Digital Performance,Multimedia Performance, Motion Capture).


Start Date: August 6, 2023. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Review of completed applications will begin March 13, 2023 and continue until position is filled.

Offering a BFA & BA in Performing Arts with concentrations in: Dance, Design & Technical Theatre (BFAOnly), Musical Theatre (BFA Only), and Theatre, the School of Performing Arts values and promotes applied learning in the classroom, studio, on stage & screen, in the community, and through site-specific engagement& performance.
