SCHOOL of KINESIOLOGY is seeking outstanding candidates for the FRANK HAYDEN ENDOWED CHAIR in SPORT and SOCIAL IMPACT

Applications are invited from exceptional candidates for the position of the Frank Hayden Endowed Chair in Sport and Social Impact, School of Kinesiology, Faculty of Health Sciences, effective July 1, 2024, or as negotiated. The successful applicant will be appointable at the rank of Associate Professor or Full Professor with tenure. Salary and rank commensurate with qualifications and experience. The successful candidate will contribute to the vision of the school as a global leader in research and education through a multidisciplinary approach to kinesiology.

The School of Kinesiology in the Faculty of Health Sciences at Western University promotes the benefits of physical activity and sport to society by providing a multidisciplinary approach to discovery, dissemination, and application of related knowledge and outcomes. Kinesiology is home to the International Centre for Olympic Studies (including Paralympic and Special Olympics), and the Sport and Social Impact Research Group. Kinesiology at Western is ranked 26th in the world for Sport Related Subjects (QS 2023). The School of Kinesiology champions three research clusters focusing on Physical Activity and 1) Brain Health, 2) Mobility, and 3) Social Impact with strong links to Faculty Research Centres in Activity and Aging, and Health Equity and Social Inclusion.

The Chair will be a recognized scholar whose research will address the role of sport in contributing to social change for those with intellectual disabilities. The focus on the social impact of sport/physical activity aligns with the Faculty of Health Sciences research pillars of social inclusion, health equity, and mobility. Through the development of an interdisciplinary research program, the Chair will collaborate with other scholars, graduate trainees, and partner organizations to build a team to investigate sport/physical activity participation for all persons, with emphasis on those with intellectual disabilities. The Chair will be expected to maintain an externally funded research program, support graduate trainees, and demonstrate innovative approaches for research with persons with intellectual disabilities.

The Chair will also work closely with Special Olympics Canada and contribute to a knowledge hub that brings together research on intellectual disability, and support knowledge translation for Special Olympics communities, athletes, families, and supporters. This will help support the collective impact of the Special Olympics movement and generate greater capacity to deliver on the vision of enriching the lives of Canadians with intellectual disabilities through sport.

The successful candidate will have a PhD in Kinesiology or a related field, have demonstrated excellence in research and research leadership, and a demonstrated record of external research funding. The candidate ideally will have established proficiency in developing and teaching courses in traditional and flexible learning environments. The successful candidate will also be expected to participate in relevant service to the School of Kinesiology, Faculty of Health Sciences, University and work closely with Special Olympics Canada.
