The Department of Psychology at Virginia Tech is recruiting a clinical scientist for an open-rank faculty position within our clinical science Ph.D. training program. Our Clinical Science program is nationally recognized (2017 ABCT Outstanding Training Program) and dually accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA) and the Psychological Clinical Science Accreditation System (PCSAS). The successful applicant will be expected to conduct programmatic research, teach undergraduate and/or graduate students, mentor undergraduate and doctoral students, and direct the clinical training program serving a 5-year term as Director of Clinical Training (DCT). The start date of transition into the DCT role from regular faculty will be negotiable with the Department Chair.

We seek a colleague with an internationally recognized program of research and a track record of obtaining extramural funding that will add to our clinical and experimental program areas of strength, including, but not limited to, developmental science and neuroscience. Research content area is open, but we prioritize the use of scientifically informed methods to enhance mental and physical health, wellbeing, and healthy decisions through the interplay of research, intervention, and implementation across diverse and underserved populations. Our faculty have multiple interests including risk/resiliency and adaptation across contexts, decision making, developmental psychopathology, community-engaged research, stress and coping, emotion regulation, and neuroscience perspectives cutting across conditions such as ADHD, anxiety, autism, depression, eating disorders, PTSD/trauma, and substance use.

The ideal candidate will support the growth of this program as a mentor to junior scientists, participating in service activities and student and faculty mentoring to build and support the program for the future. The position will have a substantial service component as the DCT. During the applicant’s term as DCT, reductions in teaching load and a summer stipend will be available to support the Director’s program activities. Additional responsibilities may also include teaching graduate courses, mentoring graduate research, and supervising assessment and/or practica.

Virginia Tech is a R1 ranked research institution with a long-standing history of exceptional clinical and research training. Virginia Tech’s clinical science program has adopted the scientist-practitioner model of training, with three on-site clinics (the Child Study Center, the VT Autism Clinic & Center for Autism Research, and the Psychological Services Center), allowing for opportunities for research and clinical training. Doctoral students also complete external practicum training, typically during their third year.

The Department of Psychology at Virginia Tech currently has 29 tenure track faculty, 1 collegiate faculty member, 1 clinical faculty member, 2 instructional faculty, and 9 support staff. The department trains 60 graduate students and over 900 undergraduate students each year. The department is housed in the College of Science and is central to the College and University’s motto “Ut Prosim”, or “that I may serve”as a department devoted to the service of humanity through Psychological Science. Required Qualifications
Potential candidates must have a PhD in Psychology by appointment start date, be licensed or license eligible in the Commonwealth of Virginia, with an established research program, substantial experience in the development of clinical training programs and demonstrated ability in leadership roles.

While serving as DCT and beyond, candidates will be expected to continue an innovative research program, evidenced by a record of high-quality publications and external research support, combined with a strong commitment to undergraduate and graduate level teaching and mentorship.
