Job Description

Reporting to the Assistant Dean and Director of Learning Environments, this position provides strategic direction for the Art +Architecture Library, which houses roughly 85,000 volumes and includes unique and rare holdings, architectural drawings, works of design, and visual art. The Head of the Art + Architecture Library oversees multiple functional areas of the library, including public services, collections, library spaces and exhibits, budget, and staff. The Head proactively engages with the faculty, students, and staff of the College of Architecture and Urban Studies (CAUS), which includes programs in architecture, landscape architecture, industrial design, visual arts, and art history. Primary responsibilities include providing services in the areas of reference, research assistance, teaching and learning, scholarly communications, and digital initiatives. This position also frequently collaborates with University Libraries colleagues and campus partners in instruction, exhibits, and other forms of programming and outreach. Throughout all activities, the Head of the Art + Architecture Library actively supports library efforts to provide an inclusive and diverse library and learning environment committed to Virginia Tech’s Principles of Community.

Required Qualifications

– Master of Library Science (MLS) or advanced degree(s) in architecture, art, art history, or design

– Experience working in an academic setting

– Experience providing leadership, including the development and implementation of achievable goals and priorities

– Demonstrated knowledge of collection development principles and best practices

– Demonstrated knowledge of research and instruction principles and best practices

– Demonstrated knowledge of current trends in the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, design and/or visual art

Preferred Qualifications

– Experience working in an academic or research library

– Graduate degree in art history, architecture, fine arts, or design disciplines

– Familiarity with ACRL Visual Literacy Standards and the ARLIS/NA Core Competencies for Art Information Professionals

– Experience in reference and research assistance, both face-to-face and virtual

– Experience as subject liaison in the field of art, architecture or design

– Collection development experience in subject areas related to art, architecture, or design

– Experience teaching information literacy within an arts and design context

– Supervisory experience or experience leading junior staff

– Familiarity with digital scholarship tools, methodologies and initiatives that support new scholarship, particularly in art, architecture and design

– Experience creating exhibits in physical and digital formats

– Experience using the Springshare platform (e.g., LibGuides and LibAnswers)

– Reading knowledge of at least one non-English language relevant to architecture, design, and the visual arts
