We are excited to announce a tenure-track Assistant Professor position for a Companion Animal Applied Ethologist in the School of Animal Sciences (SAS) at Virginia Tech. SAS has a vibrant companion animal program, with over 70% of undergraduate students choosing the companion animal track, as well as a growing concentration in Applied Animal Behavior and Welfare in our college’s Master’s in Agriculture and Life Sciences. The successful candidate will bring an applied ethology perspective to our companion animal program, with a preferred focus on shelter animals and associated issues.
This is a full-time, tenure-track, 9-month appointment at the main Blacksburg campus in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The position has primary responsibilities in teaching (50%) and extension (50%). Teaching will involve both undergraduate and graduate courses, including contributing to courses currently offered and developing new courses in the candidate’s area of interest. Extension in defined broadly and includes applied research and its dissemination, working with Virginia Cooperative Extension agents, and stakeholders such as shelter staff, community veterinarians, owners, and 4-H’ers. There are ample opportunities for innovative collaboration both within SAS, as well as across campus, such as with Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Biology, and Department of Psychology.
Required qualifications: Ph.D. in Animal Sciences, Biological Sciences, Veterinary Medicine or related fields. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Preferred qualifications: The incumbent should also demonstrate capacity to obtain extramural funding in support of their program, mentor graduate and undergraduate students, demonstrated Extension or outreach experience and have significant scholarly activities appropriate to the discipline.
