Job Description
Summary
The Department of English at Ursuline College seeks a teacher-scholar for a one-year post, renewable for up to three years, who embraces the spirit of Cleveland’s own Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards: “The Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards recognize books that have made important contributions to our understanding of racism and our appreciation of the rich diversity of human cultures.”
Responsibility
The fellow will teach a 3-3 course load in the Department of English—both first-year required courses (composition) and upper-division courses of their choosing and/or design. We especially encourage applications from candidates with expertise in the fields of the digital humanities, public humanities, and/or public writing. Additionally, there are opportunities to contribute to our minors in women’s studies and / or African American studies.
The postdoctoral fellow will be expected to contribute to scholarship surrounding our Rust Belt pathway—a certificate program offered through our core curriculum that is centered on fostering civically engaged students who are knowledgeable of local challenges and are solution-minded—by designing a course or a project and/or giving public-facing talks. (Information about the program can be found at http://www.ursuline.edu/neh)
Ursuline, located just outside of Cleveland, Ohio, is a four-year, women-focused institution of higher education offering graduate and undergraduate holistic education that transforms students for service, leadership, and professional excellence through our values-based curricula. An American Enterprise Institute study ranked Ursuline #1 in the nation for student socioeconomic mobility. Ursuline College is also ranked third best in Ohio for non-traditional students and has been listed by the U.S. Department of Education as the most affordable private, liberal arts college in Ohio for three consecutive years. More than one third of the students at Ursuline (including 27% of the graduate student population) are students of color, and we seek to have diversity among our faculty and staff as well.
Candidates must possess the ability to work within diverse settings, and a commitment to undergraduate teaching in an academically challenging, collaborative environment. We encourage applications from individuals who will contribute to diversity in higher education and the potential to advance the department’s goal of a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive scholarly environment.
How to Apply
Candidates must have a Ph.D. in English or a related field in hand by the time of appointment. Please apply through the “Apply Now” link in this listing, or send a cover letter, teaching statement, curriculum vitae, and three letters of recommendation to Kathryn LaFontana, Vice President for Academic Affairs, Ursuline College, 2550 Lander Road, Pepper Pike, OH 44124.
