The UWM Peck School of the Arts is one of the largest and most comprehensive arts schools in the region. It has over 2,000 undergraduate and graduate students and offers degree programs in Art & Design, Dance, Film, Music, and Theatre. The UWM campus is located on the east side of Milwaukee less than a mile from Lake Michigan. The Department of Music seeks an experienced conductor and teacher, appointed at the level of assistant, associate, or full professor commensurate with qualifications and experience. The successful candidate will provide leadership in all aspects of the university band program; conduct the UWM Wind Ensemble and other instrumental ensembles as needed; work collaboratively with Wind, Brass, and Percussion faculty; teach undergraduate and graduate courses related to instrumental conducting and literature; oversee UWM pre-college festivals and youth band programs; actively recruit undergraduate and graduate music students; provide service and leadership to area and state public school band programs; maintain an active schedule of research and/or creative activity; and participate in a full range of faculty governance and service activities within the University and Department of Music.
Specific tasks and duties:
1. Conduct the UWM Wind Ensemble and other instrumental ensembles as needed
2. Teach conducting lessons to instrumental conducting master’s students
3. Teach courses assigned from the following areas of need:
• Introduction to Conducting
• Instrumental Conducting
• Graduate Wind Band Literature
• Graduate Score Reading
4. Coordinate annual UWM middle and high school band festivals and pre-college programs including the UWAY Youth Wind Ensemble
5. Work with other band and chamber music directors to oversee all UWM band activities including the administration of a contemporary music ensemble utilizing players from the wind ensemble and symphony orchestra
6. Participate in Music Department faculty meetings, University and Music Department committees, and other areas of service to the department, school, and university

Applicants for this position must have or provide evidence of the following:
• A doctoral degree in music OR equivalent professional experience and a master’s degree in music
• A minimum of two years of successful teaching in a college or university band setting as the primary director of a collegiate instrumental ensemble
• Demonstrated success in recruiting collegiate music students
• A history of working in or working collaboratively with high school band programs
• Evidence of outstanding performance by bands under the candidate’s direction
Highly qualified applicants for this position will also provide evidence of the following:
• A DMA or PhD in instrumental conducting OR a master’s degree in instrumental conducting with doctoral-equivalent professional conducting experience or a doctorate in a closely related field
• 3+ years of full-time employment as a collegiate band director and music professor
• Experience successfully coordinating an active instrumental program including overseeing festivals and youth ensembles
• Documented record of successful recruitment of undergraduate and graduate music majors and band participants
• Demonstration of a clear, engaging, and efficient teaching and conducting style that leads to accurate, technically sound, and expressive playing
• A distinguished record of guest conducting, presentations, and publications as well as a history of recognized awards or honors in the field of wind band music.
• Active participation and leadership in relevant professional organizations
