Assistant Professor – Soil Chemistry

 

The Department of Plant & Soil Science at the University of Vermont (UVM) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor specializing in soil chemistry. The position is full-time 9-month appointment with a split research / teaching appointment. We are seeking candidates with advanced training in soil sciences with emphasis in soil chemistry. Applicants must have experience in one or more of the following areas: terrestrial soils, pollutant movement, soil health metrics, soil chemistry impacts on crop nutrition, interactions between soil chemistry and microbial communities, or related areas. All applicants are required to hold a Ph.D. degree in soil science or a closely related field. Postdoctoral experience is strongly preferred.

 

The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong scholarly track record and ability to develop a vigorous sponsored research program in soil chemistry. The successful applicant will join a growing and vibrant department whose mission is to expand and integrate knowledge of agroecology, landscape design, and food systems. Preference will be given to candidates that demonstrate interest in participating and contributing to the mission of the new UVM-ARS Food Systems Research Center, as well as the new Institute for Agroecology, with a focus on small and medium-size farms. Opportunities to partner with Extension on applied research and with state and federal agencies are readily available and will be encouraged. The successful candidate will teach at all levels, and advise undergraduate and graduate master’s and doctoral students, in addition to professional contributions and service, they will be expected to teach at least two courses, an advanced course in Soil Chemistry and Water, and a laboratory course related to Pollutant Movement in Air, Land & Water for environmental science majors. Opportunities to teach Soil Morphology and Soil/Water Pollution/Bioremediation are possible.
