Position Description: The Sports Media and Communication program in the Harrington
School of Communication and Media at the University of Rhode Island seeks an innovative
scholar-teacher for a tenured position with faculty rank of Full Professor to begin in Fall 2024.
Prior academic leadership and administrative experience is required,, along with a distinguished
reputation in the area of Sports Media and Communication. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in
communication, sports communication, sports media, sports management, sports studies, or a
related field; an established scholarly research agenda; and a record of teaching and research
excellence commensurate with the qualifications for appointment as Full Professor at the
University of Rhode Island. Further, candidates should demonstrate potential to build programs,
mentor faculty, develop curriculum, and foster connections across the institution and throughout
the broader community. We will consider quantitative researchers with specializations in all
areas of sports media and communication such as sports communication/media, sports
analytics, sports marketing, strategic communication, sports entertainment, or related fields ;
scholars with research and/or teaching specializations and/or relevant industry work in applied
strategic communication and analytics are especially encouraged to apply.

of Arts and Sciences, the largest college in the University of Rhode Island, the Harrington
School is home to programs in Communication Studies, Film/Media, Journalism, Library and
Information Studies, Public Relations, Sports Media and Communication, Business of Media,
and Professional and Public Writing.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: teaching and developing courses in quantitative
analysis of sport and/or applied strategic sport communication; advising undergraduate
students; serving on program, school, and college committees; maintaining an active research
agenda; and pursuing external research funding through grants and contracts. The successful
candidate will also act as program director for the Sports Media and Communication program, a
service assignment whose responsibilities include: proposing and developing curricular
changes; developing sources of external funding for the program; building alumni, industry and
community relationships in order to identify internships and other experiential learning
opportunities for students; and representing the interests of the program to the Harrington
School, the College of Arts and Sciences, the University, and the Rhode Island community.
