The Harrington School of Communication and Media at the University of Rhode Island invites applicants for a tenure-line faculty position at the rank of Assistant/Associate Professor of Sports Media and Communication program, to begin fall 2023.
We seek candidates whose teaching and research interests focus on one or more of the following: media and/or communication with a focus in sport, physical cultural studies, and/or critical sport studies. Responsibilities include conducting research, teaching existing core courses, and developing new courses in the candidate’s area(s) of expertise. They should be able to demonstrate the ability to develop a sustained research agenda, provide evidence of successful teaching and advising, and demonstrate the ability to work effectively with students, faculty, staff and administrators.
The candidate will enhance research and scholarship in the topical areas relevant to the study of contemporary sports media and communication and sports media culture, especially in the areas of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI) – specifically in regards to race, gender, and sexuality.
The candidate will ideally forge connections with departments like Gender and Women’s Studies, Africana Studies, and other areas of their specialization, in promotion of a center of excellence at URI in the critical study of sports media and communication. Opportunities also exist for collaborations across campus, including with URI Athletics and campus media outlets.
The Harrington School of Communication and Media is a leader in communication and media research and education. Administratively housed within the College of Arts and Sciences, the largest college in the University of Rhode Island, the Harrington School is home to programs in Communication Studies, Film/Media, Journalism, Library and Information Studies, Public Relations, Sports Media and Communication, Business of Media, and Writing and Rhetoric.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Developing and delivering courses at undergraduate and possibly graduate levels, developing a scholarly or creative agenda, advising students, and performing service at the department/program, school, college, and/or university level(s) as appropriate. Standard workload includes 18 credit-hours of teaching per year (normally 3 courses per semester).
