Job Description

Nursing Tenure Track Faculty

We are seeking a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track faculty member, with the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor. The successful candidate will have a program of research focused on one of three broad areas: innovation and technology for health, including nursing education; psychosocial consequences of health and wellness; or self-management of chronic conditions.

Reporting directly to the Dean, the tenure system faculty engages in all aspects of faculty role including research, teaching, and service. The successful candidates will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses; supervise graduate students; contribute significantly to the advancement of nursing discovery by establishing a vibrant, independent research program; and play an active role in the community and academic service activities in the Colleges of Nursing, the wider University, and the profession.

Faculty will teach the nurses of the future and participate in the development, implementation, and evaluation of educational programming in the College of Nursing. They will work with the College of Nursing faculty and other departments on campus to promote opportunities for inter-professional collaboration in research and education.

The Elaine Marieb College of Nursing at the University of Massachusetts Amherst prepares students at the baccalaureate, master’s, and doctoral levels to practice in a wide variety of healthcare settings and develops nursing leaders and researchers to educate future generations. Our faculty members draw on their advanced clinical skills and innovative research in their teaching to prepare students for their careers by using state-of-the-art technology and techniques.

Essential Functions

Teach graduate and undergraduate courses for the College of Nursing-50%

  • Develop and implement course syllabi, learning objectives, assignments, and teaching materials
  • Participate in the evaluation of students, including grading student assignments and providing feedback to students for each course that is taught
  • Teach courses face to face and online within the baccalaureate and graduate programs
  • Collaborate with other faculty in planning, developing, and implementing teaching/learning strategies and curricula
  • Recommend new instructional and educational techniques obtained at professional conferences, user groups, and self-development
  • Serve as an advisor to graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Hold weekly office hours.
  • Contribute to the implementation and success of educational technology, e.g. Online learning platforms, Echo360, Simulation, Exam Soft, Typhon, etc.

Scholarship-40%

  • Engage in an active program of the Scholarship of Discovery as defined by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing
  • Provide opportunities for regular engagement with students and faculty on campus as a resource and mentor in your research area
  • Mentor undergraduate honors students, DNP capstone students, and PhD students
    Seek extramural funding for a program of research consistent with the goals of the College of Nursing

Service-10%

  • Provide service for the achievement of College Goals
  • Participate as an active member of College and University committees including College Faculty Assembly and annual retreats
  • Assist with and represent the College at orientation, registration, and graduation activities for incoming and graduating students
  • Recommend resources and changes according to College needs
  • Participate in the hiring and selection of faculty of the college through attendance at candidate presentations
  • Participate in prospective nursing student recruitment activities
  • Participate in the development, recommendation, implementation of academic curriculum policies/procedures and issue resolution
  • Engage in activities that advance the mission and goals of the College and University
    Additional
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Requirements

  • An earned research doctorate in Nursing or related discipline (i.e., PhD, DNSc)
  • MS in Nursing is required if a doctoral degree is in another field
  • Eligibility for Massachusetts RN license.
  • An RN license in Massachusetts is required by time of appointment
  • Possess a minimum of two (2) years full-time experience in nursing, nursing education, or the equivalent, within the last five (5) years and evidence of competence in nursing instruction
  • Evidence of professional development to maintain expertise appropriate to teaching
  • Post-doctoral Research Fellowship is preferred
  • Experience as nursing faculty including teaching preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to maintain nursing education expertise
  • Ability to communicate effectively with undergraduate/graduate students, faculty, and staff both orally and in writing
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Ability to use an online teaching platform and basic IT applications
  • Good organizational skills
  • Ability to meet deadlines

Work Schedule

Your presence on campus and regular office hours are expected throughout the academic year.

Salary Information

Salary commensurate with education, experience, and certifications.
