Job Description

The Department of Modern Languages, Linguistics and Intercultural Communication (MLLI, https://mlli.umbc.edu) at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) invites applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor position in Korean, beginning August 2023. We seek candidates with a teaching and research concentration in Korean cultural studies, Korean linguistics, Applied Linguistics or Second Language Acquisition (with a focus on Korean), who would also advance the MLLI department’s fruitful research in intercultural communication from the perspective of cultural studies, language acquisition and pedagogy, linguistics, literature, and sociology.

Candidates must have completed a Ph.D. in Korean studies, Korean linguistics or Applied linguistics with a Korean focus by August 2023. We are eager to read about the candidate’s focused research agenda and commitment to high quality undergraduate and graduate teaching experience (or potential) in both Korean and English. We encourage candidates to describe the ways in which their research, teaching, and/or life experience contribute to inclusive excellence, such as their ability to work with underserved, underrepresented, international, and first generation populations and their capacity to respond in pedagogically productive ways to the aspirations and needs of UMBC students.

The annual teaching load is five courses. Candidates will teach upper-level Korean courses and be prepared to participate in the rotation of at least one of the MLLI core courses (MLL 190 Structural and Biological Aspects of Language, MLL 191 Cultural and Social Aspects of Language, MLL 230 World Language Communities, MLL 301 Textual Analysis and MLL 305 Intercultural Communication) and at least one core course in the Masters in Intercultural Communication (MLL 601 Intercultural Pragmatics, MLL 602 Ethnography of Communication, MLL 603 Political Economy of Culture and MLL 605 The Field of Intercultural Communication).

UMBC is a public Carnegie Research 1, minority-serving institution located in Catonsville, Maryland within the Baltimore-Washington corridor’s hub of Korean cultural offerings. The university has a student population of 14,000 graduate and undergraduate students. US News and World Report regularly ranks UMBC in the top 10 of most innovative universities, and the Chronicle of Higher Education recognizes UMBC among its “Great Colleges to Work For” with regards to cooperative governance, compensation, teaching environment, and work-life balance. At UMBC we are especially proud of our diverse student population, one that is exceptionally served by the intercultural makeup of the MLLI faculty body.

We invite candidates to join MLLI at UMBC in redefining excellence in higher education through an inclusive culture that connects innovative teaching and learning, research across disciplines, and civic engagement. Applicants should submit their materials by November 18, 2022 for priority consideration. Please provide: (1) a 2 page cover letter; (2) a 2 page statement addressing how the candidate’s commitment to diversity and inclusiveness informs their teaching philosophy, research agenda, and service; (3) a CV including courses taught; (4) one sample publication; and (5) three letters of recommendation addressing the impact of the candidate’s research, teaching, and service and/or potential. Candidates may choose to submit up to three syllabi relevant to the position for the November deadline. These materials will be required of campus interviewees. Please address questions to Dr. Erin Hogan, Search Chair, Department of Modern Languages, Linguistics and Intercultural Communication, ekhogan@umbc.eduwith the subject line “MLLI-Korean Search.” Required application materials and submission instructions are available at http://apply.interfolio.com/116045.
