Statement of the Job:
The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of Maine seeks to fill an Associate Professor/Department Chair position with a starting date of January 1, 2024.  This position involves a split of 50% administrative, 25% teaching, and 25% research responsibilities. The individual will provide administrative leadership for the department, teach and advise, and establish an independent research program. The position carries an expectation to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within the University and the discipline.

 

The University of Maine offers the only undergraduate and graduate programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders in the State of Maine. The department’s mission is to promote excellence in academic and clinical education, research and service in speech-language pathology and audiology to serve individuals with communication disorders across the life span. We provide a significant service to the state by not only educating future speech-language pathologists who will practice in the state but also by providing services to individuals in our on-campus clinic and through community outreach programs in preschools, public schools, medical facilities and state organizations.
Responsibilities:
Responsibilities include administrative, teaching, and research duties. Administrative responsibilities include serving as Department Chair and ASHA Program Director. The Department Chair, with an initial appointment of three years, oversees financial decisions (the departmental budget, an endowment), academic programming, faculty/staff hiring and review, strategic planning, and responses to student concerns. The chair also manages the Madelyn E. and Albert D. Conley Speech, Language and Hearing Center, a public-facing clinical services provider, and represents the department to the college Dean, university upper administration, and public.

 

Teaching responsibilities include courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The faculty member will develop and maintain an active research program.

Required:

Meet the requirements for rank of Associate Professor at the University of Maine
Demonstrated leadership experience
Demonstrated experience in mentorship
Demonstrated experience in fiscal oversight
Demonstrated excellence in oral and written communication
Experience in recruiting students
Commitment to enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion within the discipline and institution
Demonstrated scholarship potential and an interest in engaging students in research or translating research into practice.
Commitment to teaching, scholarship, and service capacity for excellence in university-level teaching and mentoring
Preferred:

Licensure or eligibility in Maine as SLP
An established research agenda or plan including but not limited to previous publications, grant funding, and/or participation in conferences.
Expertise and experience in the following areas: adult neurogenic speech and language disorders, medical speech-language pathology, fluency, school-age language and literacy, autism, clinical methods, research methods and multicultural/diversity
Earned CCC-SLP
Demonstrated experience in mentoring faculty
