The University of Illinois Springfield and College of Liberal Arts and Sciences invites applications for tenure-track Assistant Professor, of English in creative writing (poetry) beginning August 16, 2022 as part of its inaugural cluster hire of three faculty in the English and Sociology departments. Preferred additional areas of expertise this creative writing (poetry) position in the English and Modern Languages Department include the following areas of literary and/or cultural studies: Indigenous, Latinx, African American, African Caribbean, Afro-Latinx, or Afro-Asian Studies, Queer, and Disability Studies. A Ph.D. in English or a related field is required. Expertise may be demonstrated through teaching experience, publication, or additional credentials, such as an MFA. The teaching load is 3-3.
This initial cluster hire aims to align with our institutional values by engaging in the strategic recruitment of candidates who are integrated into the communities they study and possess teaching and research interests in diversity, equity, and inclusion, and/or underrepresented or minoritized groups. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to engage with programs aimed at supporting underrepresented faculty, for example, the Underrepresented Faculty Recruitment program

The successful candidate will join a collaborative department with interconnected literature, creative writing, linguistics, and rhetoric composition in academic programming. The candidate must be able to develop inclusive courses that support our diverse student population. The candidate must be able to teach first-year writing, lower division (general education), creative writing courses, and core and foundational courses in the major or minor in addition to upper-division creative writing courses. There is ample opportunity for course development, and for work on diversity, inclusion, and social and racial justice. Creative writing faculty work with students on the UIS literary journal, Violet Margin, and organizing the UIS Shelterbelt Reading Series. Other duties include mentoring students, participating in department and university service, and ongoing scholarly or creative activity.

Responsibilities: Teaching load is 3-3.  This is a full-time on-campus position tenure-track academic appointment. UIS tenure-system faculty are expected to be available and engaged in the campus community, with assigned professional responsibilities for teaching, scholarship, and service.

Qualifications: A Ph.D. in English or a related field is required. Expertise may be demonstrated through teaching experience, publication, or additional credentials, such as an MFA. The doctorate should be granted by the start date.
