The School of Molecular and Cellular Biology welcomes applications for a Sponsored Research Business Analyst.  In this position, the incumbent will manage financial and regulatory aspects of sponsored research grants, contracts and subcontracts for faculty investigators in a national recognized top-volume research environment for the School of Molecular and Cellular Biology.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Faculty Consulting and Guidance

• Counsel research faculty during the pre- and post-award process for externally-funded research projects.  Formulate complex project budgets and interpret pertinent regulatory guidelines.  Provide expenditure projections and forecast financial trends for faculty funding portfolios.

• Tailor financial management of funding portfolios based on knowledge of individual investigator specialized research fields.

• Advise faculty toward a recommended course of action on complex federal and private industry regulations.

Pre-award Coordination

• Collaborate with inter-disciplinary researchers on campus and those at other Institutions of higher learning and private foundations during both the application and award execution process.

Post-award Coordination

• Establish professional rapport with departmental and central campus offices to facilitate effective and efficient business processes.

• Implement specialized internal financial systems.

Develop other related systems for sponsored research management, as needed. Initiate independent action and exercise individual authority based upon level of knowledge and professional experience.

Compliance Coordination

• Conduct analysis of faculty effort in accordance with regulatory compliance requirements. Advocate for faculty while representing the School and the University during negotiations with external funding agencies.

Seek continuing education opportunities or relevant professional certifications.

Qualifications:

Required: Bachelor’s degree in business administration, accounting, finance, economics or a field related to the position.  Two years overseeing pre- and post-award processes for externally funded research projects. Demonstrated experience managing multiple funding accounts, developing research budgets, and fiscal planning.

Preferred: At least one year experience serving as an internal control point for cost allocability and sponsored project effort tracking.  At least one year experience of an approver role of costs both payroll and non-payroll ensuring allowability and allocability of cost to fund.  At least one year experience coordinating with and providing counsel to faculty concerning funds in their portfolio.  Experience at an institution of higher education setting.  Experience in accounting, auditing, or laboratory research in a scientific field; prior experience with federal electronic research administration systems such as NSF FASTLane and Grants.gov; Illinois Certified Research Administrator

Successful candidates will have the following:  Knowledge of sponsored research activity within a University setting. Extensive knowledge of PC-based tools including Word and Excel.  Ability to exhibit discretion in professional judgment. Critical and analytical mindset.  Attention to detail.  Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize.  Highly developed communication skills. Ability to develop and tailor tools to effectively communicate ideas and analyze situations. Ability to maintain confidentiality and to represent the School and the University in a professional manner.  Awareness of, and sensitivity to, cultural and linguistic differences. Commitment to diversity and inclusion.  Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Governmental Accounting Standards (GAS) and knowledge of database applications.

This position is a 100% full-time, twelve month, benefits-eligible position.  Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.  Starting date is as soon as possible.
