INTRODUCTION

The Department of Allied Health Sciences at the University of Connecticut invites applications for a faculty appointment as Assistant Professor in the area of Environmental Health. This appointment is a full-time (9-month), tenure track position with an expected start date of August 23, 2023.

Allied Health Sciences is one of eight departments in the College of Agriculture, Health, and Natural Resources (CAHNR). It is a large, vibrant, multidisciplinary department with more than 30 faculty, 750 undergraduates (40% of whom are non-white), 30 post-baccalaureate students, and 30 graduate students. The Department offers an undergraduate major in Allied Health Sciences with multiple concentrations; three nationally-accredited professional programs; four post-baccalaureate programs, two master’s programs; and a Ph.D. program in Health Promotion Sciences. The Department strives for inclusive excellence in attracting, retaining, and valuing talented people from all backgrounds.

The College of Agriculture, Health, and Natural Resources has developed and implemented a Strategic Vision to guide the development and focus of our teaching, research, and extension/outreach programs in the years 2020-2025. The successful candidate will be expected to make significant contributions to at least one of CAHNR’s five strategic initiatives:

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

We invite candidates from a broad range of academic disciplines and research areas to apply. The successful candidate will have a research focus in environmental and/or occupational health science as it relates to human health. Specific areas of expertise are open but may include climate change, toxicology, occupational/industrial health, air and water quality, environmental justice, public policy, or their combination. We encourage candidates with research interests that address inequities in health experienced by historically marginalized groups. Candidates will be supported in seeking an affiliate appointment in a university center or institute (see below) and can have the opportunity to provide leadership to occupational and environmental health and safety programs. Candidates will be expected to integrate their research and teaching with faculty in the Department, College, and University, such as Public Health Sciences, Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, the Institute for the Environment, and the Institute for Collaboration on Health, Intervention, and Policy (InCHIP).

Specific duties and responsibilities include:

Develop a high-quality, externally funded research program that addresses environmental and/or occupational health.
Teach the equivalent of up to three 3-credit courses each year.
Provide research mentoring for graduate students and research experiences for undergraduate students.
Participate in professional development consistent with personal and professional goals.
Serve on Department, College, and/or University committees.
Perform other duties as assigned.
The successful candidate will also be expected to support the Department’s efforts to:

Recruit and retain students from diverse backgrounds and underrepresented groups.
Demonstrate through teaching and/or public engagement the richness of diversity in the learning experience.
Help develop student competency in addressing cultural, structural/systemic, and environmental factors that influence health.
Use pedagogical techniques designed to meet the needs of diverse learning styles and intellectual interests.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A doctoral degree or equivalent in environmental health, occupational health, public health, or a related field.
A track record of scholarly activity as evidenced by publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at national and/or international conferences and/or workshops.
Experience providing instruction in areas of expertise.
Demonstrated excellent skills in oral and written communication and strong interpersonal skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Postdoctoral training in area of expertise.
Demonstrated collaborations with researchers from other disciplines.
Serving as a course instructor of record at the undergraduate level.
Potential to supervise graduate and/or undergraduate student research.
Evidence of securing extramural research funding.
Demonstrated success in engaging with diverse communities, including first-generation college students and underrepresented populations, or sub-populations with excess risk due to unique exposures (e.g., lifestyle/cultural) or occupational exposures.
Experience in understanding and contributing to cultures of inclusive excellence, including working with those who have historically experienced barriers to achieving health and well-being.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a 9-month, full-time, tenure-track faculty position with an anticipated start date of August 23, 2023 or a later date that can be negotiated. The successful candidate’s academic appointment will be at the Storrs campus. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
