Position overview

Position title: Assistant Professor of Observational Astronomy and Astrophysics

Salary range: The proposed academic-year (9-month) salary range for this position is $115,000 – $128,000. A salary within this range will be offered to the successful candidate, commensurate with qualifications and experience. The appointee will be able to receive additional compensation during summer months using research funds, subject to campus policies. A 9-month salary higher than $128,000 can only be offered subject to exceptional approval by the Campus Provost / Executive Vice-Chancellor, and only in cases where a candidate has a competing offer in hand for a (9-month) salary that exceeds $128,000. A generous start-up package will be provided; we encourage negotiations on the start-up package during the offer process.


Percent time: Full-time (100%)


Anticipated start: July 1, 2024, with the academic year beginning in September 2024. Degree requirements must be met by June 30, 2024 for employment effective July 1, 2024.

Position Description


The at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the assistant professor level in observational astronomy and astrophysics. UCSC is one of the world’s leading centers for research in astronomy and astrophysics. The campus is also the home of the, which supports researchers’ access to observing and instrumental facilities, including the, the, and the and Observatories.


The successful candidate will develop innovative, externally-funded research programs, contribute to mentoring and teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and work to enhance diversity and inclusivity in the UCSC Astronomy and Astrophysics community. The current faculty has strengths in optical and near-infrared observations, instrumentation, theory, numerical simulations, and software development, with special concentrations in cosmology and galaxy formation, exoplanet detection and characterization, galactic structure, high-energy astrophysics, time-domain astronomy, star and planet formation, and particle astrophysics. We seek candidates whose research can enhance or expand on the programs mentioned above and can leverage UCO facilities. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity through UCO to develop projects – hardware, software, or collaborations – of value to the University of California astronomy and astrophysics community across its multiple campuses. PhD (or equivalent foreign degree) in astronomy, astrophysics, physics, or a related field. It is expected that the degree requirement will be completed by June 30, 2024.
