Job Description

UCLA Tenure-Track Faculty Position in Music and Data Science

University of California Los Angeles

Requisition Number: JPF07055

The University of California, Los Angeles seeks to make an interdisciplinary tenure-track hire in Music and Data Science to support programs in Musicology and Music Industry. The successful candidate will have: a Masters degree in a research-oriented discipline of the liberal arts or social sciences that provides a framework for approaching music and data as a field of study; significant experience in computation and data analysis; and some practical experience in the music industry, with special preference given to work on algorithms, streaming, analysis of “big data,” or other forms of empirical decision making. Candidates whose work brings critical inter-sectional perspectives to the discourse around music and data, and whose research or practice centers on political, social or economic justice, are especially invited to apply. The department is seeking outstanding candidates with the potential for exceptional research, and excellence in teaching, and also a clear commitment to enhancing the diversity of the faculty, graduate student population, and of the majors in both Musicology and Music Industry.

In addition to teaching in the current Musicology and the Music Industry curriculum, we anticipate that this colleague will take the lead in developing new courses in music and data science for degree programs in Music Industry, will mentor graduate students in musicology, ethnomusicology, and other related fields, and will pursue an interdisciplinary research agenda at the intersection of data science and musicology with applied science, technology, or other relevant fields. Applicants may want to speak to the collaborative possibilities available through UCLA’s Institute for Digital Research & Education (https://idre.ucla.edu), its DataX initiative (https://www3.research.ucla.edu/datax), and its programs in Digital Humanities (https://dh.ucla.edu).

Candidates should provide (1) a cover letter outlining their qualifications; (2) a scholarly CV (plus a separate professional resume if appropriate); (3) a statement addressing how their work addresses issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion; and (4) the names/contact information of four referees, one of whom should hold (or have held) an academic position, and one of whom should have direct experience in either data science or the music industry. Writing samples, letters of reference, and statements on research and teaching may be requested later in the process as needed.

The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music unites separate departments of Music, Musicology, and Ethnomusicology, as well as interdepartmental programs in Global Jazz Studies and Music Industry. It offers the BA, BM, MM, DMA, and PhD degrees in a wide array of performance and scholarly fields.

The Music Industry program focuses on conceptual and executive functions of the entertainment industry, and consists of a freestanding Minor and a hybrid BA within Musicology, with a new interdepartmental program and an independent BA in Music Industry under consideration by the Academic Senate.
