Health Communication-Open Rank Tenure-Track or Tenured Faculty Position

University of California Los Angeles

Requisition Number: JPF07120

The UCLA Fielding School of Public Health (FSPH) currently has an open-ranked tenure-track or tenured faculty position focused on health communication. This research and teaching faculty appointment is in the Department of Community Health Sciences (CHS). CHS, one of five departments within FSPH, is concerned with the social and behavioral research applied to health, health promotion, and public health practice in the context of social, cultural, political, economic, and environmental factors. The faculty is multidisciplinary and includes those whose primary training is in the social sciences, behavioral sciences, health promotion and education, health policy, nutrition, maternal and child health, and demography.

The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the need for trained public health professionals in health communication to address health equity globally and in the US. Candidates must be strongly committed to cutting-edge research, high-quality teaching, and public service related to health communication. Although the specific health field and specialization is open, successful candidates will demonstrate a track record in applied health communication research and practice. This could include social marketing, using media for social norms behavior change, digital communication, health informatics, virtual reality applications, patient and healthcare provider education, health literacy, media and news literacy, media advocacy, health journalism, crisis and emergency risk communication, combatting misinformation, and research using new media applications. We are particularly interested in those who work in collaboration with community partners, including those who employ community-based participatory research.

Appointments with expertise in health communication will have the opportunity to collaborate and strengthen efforts to enhance public health communication and research efforts with a number of institutes and partners on major public health initiatives, both at UCLA and in the larger Los Angeles and California academic, public health, nonprofit and entertainment communities.

Candidates must hold a doctoral degree (PhD, ScD, MD, DrPH or equivalent). Responsibilities include conducting innovative research, teaching core and elective courses, advising students, active service for School, Department, and professional field, and continuing or building a successful record of extramural research funding. Candidates must have excellent scholarship, teaching, and service records for their career stage. Faculty appointment level and salary will be commensurate with the candidate’s experience and qualifications.

Applications will continue to be accepted until February 15, 2022; however, those received after the review date will only be considered if the position has not yet been filled. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2022. Inquiries should be addressed to Dr. May Sudhinaraset, chair of the search committee, at mailto:msudhinaraset@ucla.edu (mail to: mailto:msudhinaraset@ucla.edu).
