POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of California, Davis, School of Medicine, is currently recruiting a joint, dually appointed position with the VA Northern California Health Care System (VANCHCS) based at Sacramento VA Medical Center, Mather, CA. The faculty position is in the Health Sciences Clinical series at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. Appointees to the Health Sciences Clinical series are required to teach, participate in university service, provide direct patient care, and engage in creative work.

Applicants must be a US Citizen, have M.D./D.O. degree, be Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Board Certified/Board eligible in Infectious Diseases, and be eligible for medical licensure in the State of California. Candidates must have experience in antimicrobial stewardship and infection prevention and strong clinical skills in management of Infectious Diseases. Successful candidates will see patients in both the inpatient and outpatient setting. Experience in or the ability to teach and supervise medical students, residents and fellows is required. The ability to work cooperatively and collegially within a diverse environment is required.

The 0.4 FTE at UC Davis will include 20% time devoted to Antimicrobial Stewardship – Involvement in management of outpatient IV antimicrobial use. Control and optimize in-patient antimicrobial use. Participate in surveillance and evaluation of hospital associated infections. They will also do one half-day outpatient ID clinic and some inpatient consultation work. Provide inpatient and outpatient care for patients with Infectious Diseases.

The 0.6 FTE at the Sacramento VA Medical Center, Mather, CA will serve as the lead of the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program (ASP) and also intermittent inpatient consult work. The position will report to the Section Chief in Infectious Diseases at VANCHCS. They will work with a team including 2 ID pharmacists and the Infectious Diseases fellow assigned to the VA. Candidates with VA merit awards and/or NIH grants along with a track record of impressive academic commitment and recognition, or experience with health services or implementation research, or quality improvement experience are strongly encouraged to apply. VANCHCS serves a broad geographic region of Northern California from the East Bay to the Greater Sacramento Region and north to the Oregon border, operating a 100-bed hospital and medical center complex, 10 outlying clinics, and a community living center with over 100 beds.

The successful candidate should demonstrate a strong commitment to quality patient care, medical education, antimicrobial stewardship, and research. They will have training in academic pursuits, be dedicated to continued scholarship, and bring strong interpersonal skills and a history of collaborating across a broad range of medical specialties. They should also bring leadership skills to lead an ASP team, including a full time Infectious Diseases Pharmacist and other infectious diseases staff, to ensure ASP competence, a collaborative work environment, and excellence in patient care and outcomes.
Responsibilities will include monitoring trends in antimicrobial use, identifying priority areas for ASP, implement strategies to improve antimicrobial use, and lead and grow ASP efforts at VANCHCS. Additional duties include providing infectious diseases consultation, trainee supervision and education. VANCHCS is affiliated with the University of California, Davis School of Medicine and will have a faculty appointment at the University of California, Davis, Department of Internal Medicine.
