Job Description

The University of Arizona’s College of Veterinary Medicine (UA-CVM) invites applications for three full-time, research-focused, tenure-track positions (open-rank) in the area of human-animal interaction, with a focus on domestic species. Areas of interest include but are not limited to the human-animal bond, animal-assisted interventions and therapies, the psychology and biology of interspecies interactions, and domestic animal behavior, cognition, and welfare. The successful candidates are expected to develop highly visible and extramurally funded research programs, and to provide student mentoring and training in their areas of expertise. Strong preference will be given to candidates whose research involves quantitative methods for data analysis and interpretation.The UA-CVM has the unprecedented opportunity to transform veterinary research and training on the human-animal bond and aims to become an international leader in this area. The UA-CVM veterinary medical curriculum is built on an inclusive, evidence-based pedagogy with the goal of graduating “day-one-ready” veterinarians trained in lifelong learning and prepared to excel in diverse career trajectories. Exploring the broad areas of science underlying the human-animal bond aligns with the UA-CVM mission and will equip our graduates with innovative approaches to client communication and the ability to facilitate the development and maintenance of mutually beneficial human-animal relationships. The successful candidate will play an integral role in developing the UA-CVM research program on the human-animal bond and developing connections between the University of Arizona and animal organizations in the local community. Candidates will be expected to contribute to research training for students in both DVM and Ph.D. programs.

Duties & Responsibilities
The successful candidates will be expected to develop and maintain rigorous and extramurally funded research programs related to human-animal interaction and to help establish the University of Arizona as an international leader in this arena. Candidates will be expected to develop connections between the University of Arizona and animal organizations in the local community and to contribute to the growth of an interdisciplinary community of scholars within UA, focusing on human-animal interaction. The successful candidates will also contribute to research training and mentoring of DVM and Ph.D. students, in their areas of expertise.  In addition to core responsibilities related to research (a minimum of 65% effort will be devoted to research), candidates will also be expected to engage in service to the University and will have opportunities to contribute to teaching in their areas of expertise.

Minimum Qualifications
Ph.D. or other terminal degree with established expertise in Human-Animal Interaction research.

Preferred Qualifications
History of extramural funding and strong publication record.
