Job Description

The Division of Aviation Technology of the Community and Technical College (CTC) at the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA), provides coursework in Aviation Maintenance Technology, Air Traffic Control, Aviation Management and Professional Piloting for students pursing Certificates, Associates, and Bachelors degrees.
The Division seeks an experienced individual for the position of Assistant Dean of the Aviation Technology Division, with an anticipated a start date of July 1, 2022.

Duties:
Supervise and recruit division personnel.
Oversee the care and maintenance of the Aviation Technology Division facilities.
Assign faculty workload and oversee the creation of semester class schedules.
Lead department planning and resource allocation activities in consultation with faculty/staff to benefit all programs.
Provide effective leadership of division faculty and staff.
Lead the division in establishing strong curriculum and scheduling sequences.
Oversee the implementation of appropriate student learning outcomes in consultation with faculty with each certificate and degree program.
Implement a strong student advising program in coordination with the division’s student success coach and faculty.
Implement effective program assessments and reviews for each of the division’s certificate and degree programs.
Assist faculty with outcomes assessment and program review activities.
Develop, analyze and maintain balanced budgets in consultation with the Fiscal Director and/or division program assistants’.
Administer all fund expenditures in compliance with university human resource and board of regents’ regulations.
Ensure all laboratory and flight activities are conducted in accordance with sound risk management principles and in compliance with FAA regulations and university policies.
Project and plan for special needs including equipment maintenance and replacement, space requirements, faculty professional development and new program needs.
Perform critical analysis and lead flight and simulator operations to continuously refine cost recovery and recharge models to sustain and improve the efficiency and quality of the aircraft fleet and simulators.
Oversee membership and meetings of the Aviation Technology Division Industry Advisory Committee.
Act as the liaison between the Office of the Dean and the faculty and staff.
Serve as the liaison between the aviation programs and aviation industry partners in Alaska and beyond.
Serve on college and university committees and work cooperatively with constituent groups to promote and support division goals.
May be expected to teach one or more courses in related fields.
Participate as a member of the college leadership team.
Provide leadership in meeting academic accreditation standards and FAA certification standards as well as other national standards that may apply to the division programs of study.
Lead division interactions with the FAA and respond to FAA initiatives to maintain positive and productive memberships.
Faculty advisory for aviation students enrolled in internships.
Faculty record for all UAA flight courses.
Update the FAA, as necessary, to meet obligations related to UAA’s.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Academic preparation or extensive experience in one or more of the following aviation disciplines or closely related fields: Aviation Maintenance Technology, Air Traffic Control, Aviation Management or Professional Piloting.
Evidence of effective leadership, administrative and supervisory skills.
Proven interpersonal skills.
Evidence of effective management in a highly regulated environment.
Excellent oral and written communications skills.
Possess high professional regard for and understand roles and responsibilities of post secondary faculty.
Possess a high level of professional discretion.
FAA certificated pilot at the CFI or ATP level or FAA certified Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic, or certified professional controller (CPC), either en route or terminal.
Working knowledge of the FAA regulatory regime as it applies to Part 141 Pilot Schools, Part 147 Aviation Maintenance Technician Schools and Part 65 Dispatcher Training/ATC education.
Working knowledge of the Alaskan aviation industry/community post-secondary teaching, instruction and/or training experience in an aviation discipline.
Experience with curriculum development, academic program review, and accreditation process.
Experience with faculty governance systems and processes.
Experience with distance learning and distance learning technologies, such as Blackboard Learning System, or similar web-based educational software.

A minimum of five years experience in an aviation field is required.

Required Education or Training:
Minimum of Master’s degree required in aviation, education, or educational administration or a related field.
A minimum of three years experience in a post-secondary teaching or training environment.
A minimum of five years of organization leadership experience including responsibilities for personnel management, budget management, public interactions, regulatory coordination, inter-agency coordination, public and community partnership development.
