About UC Clermont
The University of Cincinnati Clermont College invites applicants for Faculty and Unit Head for the Social Science Department. UC Clermont College is an open-access, regional campus thirty miles east of the University of Cincinnati in Batavia, Ohio with an enrollment of approximately 2,300 students. The college offers a variety of certificates, transfer programs, two-year technical degrees, and a baccalaureate degree.

Job Overview

  • The Unit Head is the unit’s representative on the Academic Affairs leadership team, with overall responsibility for leadership and the administration of academics within the Social Sciences unit that includes the disciplines of education, psychology, history, sociology, philosophy, political science, women and gender studies, and communications.
  • The Unit Head and Associate/Full Professors are expected to teach, participate in scholarly and other professional or creative activities, as well as perform service commensurate to the Collective Bargaining Agreement at the university. This position will support the University of Cincinnati Clermont College’s mission and commitment to excellence and diversity in our students, faculty, staff, and community engagement.

Essential Functions for Unit Head
Unit Heads serve the department faculty, college administration, and the University community.

Responsibilities include leadership in:

  • The development of the academic unit’s particular mission within the academic mission of the college.
  • Advocacy of the unit’s academic programs, in the pursuit of educational excellence.
  • Promoting the selection and retention of an outstanding and diversified faculty.
  • Promoting faculty development to support professional growth.
  • Academic governance, including especially the collaborative development of appropriate procedures for governance within the academic unit (e.g., policies and
  • procedures regarding RPT, annual performance reviews, academic leaves, long-range planning, curriculum development, program review and development, and distribution and utilization of resources).
  • Promoting a climate where both the spirit and letter of affirmative action prevail.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Involvement in personal professional development and scholarship, including the development of necessary administrative skills and knowledge, and service.
  • Management and oversight of the academic unit’s budget (all funds), class schedules, course offerings, teaching assignments, and staff.
  • Implementation of appropriate provisions of the UC/AAUP, the agreement, university rules, and college bylaws (the AAUP and the University will consult on the design and implementation of contract compliance training of academic unit heads); attendance and active participation in administrative training, including training regarding the provisions of the UC/AAUP Agreement, and diversity, equity, and inclusion, principles, as required by the University.

Essential Functions for Associate and Professor

Associate Professor responsibilities include:

  • Attend meetings, participate in governance, prepare materials for teaching.
  • Evaluate and develop curriculum for department and/or college.
  • Conduct and teach assigned undergraduate courses.
  • Serve on college or university committees and participate in curriculum development activities.
  • Engage in other activities ancillary to or in support of his or her responsibilities.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Full Professor responsibilities include:

  • As senior faculty, may act as a mentor for junior faculty, research associates, and graduate students.
  • Evaluate, design and revise curriculum for department and/or college.
  • Conduct and teach assigned undergraduate courses.
  • Mentor and advise students on their development, including choices relating to academic program, research projects, and possible career directions.
  • Serve on college or university committees and participate in curriculum development activities.
  • Engage and lead in other activities ancillary to or in support of his or her responsibilities.
  • Render service to the professional or lay community which is relevant to the individual’s academic specialty.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements
Minimum requirements for starting rank of Associate Professor:

  • Terminal degree in an appropriate field for the department
  • Six years or more of full-time college-level teaching experience
  • Ability to be tenured under departmental guidelines

In addition to the requirements for starting as an Associate Professor, to be eligible for full professor status the candidate must also:

  • Four additional years of equivalent full-time faculty experience
  • Ability to be tenured at full-professor under departmental guidelines

Additional Qualifications Considered
Candidates with experience as full-time faculty in an open access admissions institution offering online, face-to-face, transfer, and technical programs; experience managing institutional assessment, curriculum, and program development; developing and implementing distance learning courses/online programs; demonstrated understanding of the major issues facing higher education today, especially related to open access institutions, as well as the flexibility to respond to the high priorities of the Dean/Associate Dean. Has been promoted to the Associate Professor level or higher.
