The Center for Bioethics at The Ohio State University is a thriving department which serves as a forum for collaborative research, education, and clinical education. The Division of Bioethics and the Department of Biomedical Education and Anatomy are located in the OSU College of Medicine and serve as the hub for our bioethics education programs and research initiatives. We offer an online MA in Bioethics program, a graduate minor, an undergraduate minor, and a clinical bioethics fellowship. We also provide education for the College of Medicine and serve the Wexner Medical Center through clinical ethics consultation. More information about the Center is available at go.osu.edu/bioethics.

Overview of Position
This position is part of The Ohio State University’s Provost’s Tenure-Track Fellow to Faculty Program. The Provost’s Tenure-Track Fellow to Faculty Program is a two-year program that assists early career scholars as they transition to the tenure track. The fellowship period provides for an in-depth start on scholarship with limited teaching requirements (although Fellows may teach one course per year if they choose) and designated faculty mentorship. Provost Fellows will also receive research funding and participate in career development programs to support their transition to assistant professor and their long-term career success. During the two-year fellowship period, the successful candidate will focus on research related to the intersection of bioethics, race, and health equity. Following the fellowship period, which is an Instructor rank appointment, Provost Fellows will transfer to the rank of Assistant Professor within the Division of Bioethics and the tenure clock will begin.
Specific role expectations include, but are not limited to:
- Supporting and developing a research program related to the intersection of race, bioethics, and health disparities. Projects may include normative philosophical scholarship, legal analysis, public health ethics, or bioethical empirical research related to health equity and race.
- Collaborating on team applications for grants, conference presentations, and team-produced publications
- Participation in the academic community of OSU, professional development activities offered by the Office of Academic Affairs (OAA), and regular communication with faculty colleagues and mentors
- Participation in Center, Division, and Department meetings and events
- Protected time and funding for research during fellowship period
- Faculty mentorship and support for career development
- Annual funds for professional development and conference travel
- Additional opportunities for clinical ethics consultation, multidisciplinary clinical ethics education, leadership, and other initiatives depending on interest and qualifications
- Opportunities for mentorship of undergraduate and graduate students on topics related to the intersection of bioethics, race, and health equity
- Access to Bioethics educational offerings and the opportunity to test ideas through guest lectures and forums
Successful applicants will:
- Have strong interpersonal skills
- Have a robust research agenda that is likely to lead to publication in high-impact journals and academic press and/or external funding and a demonstrated commitment to inclusion and diversity. The Division has particular interest in research focused on questions that concern health policy, stigma, medical racism, trust, health disparities, the concept of race in medicine, health surveillance, healthcare and the criminal justice system, and/or the intersection between race, gender, disability, and other social identities and access to healthcare.
- Be comfortable working in both in person and online settings
- Enjoy working in a collegial team environment with collaborative relationships across the university
- MD, PhD, or JD in hand in Philosophy, Bioethics, Public Health, or a related field by the time of appointment. ABD candidates are welcome to apply.

- Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.
- The Division of Bioethics anticipates a start date during the 2023-2024 academic year, with a preference for the Autumn 2023 semester (August 2023). The successful candidate will be expected to relocate to Columbus, but the Division is willing to consider an adjusted start date or initial remote/hybrid working arrangement to facilitate a successful transition.
