Description: Applications are invited for an Animal Welfare Scientist at the position of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor in the Department of Animal Sciences in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) at The Ohio State University. This is a 9-month tenure-track position that is 70% education (distributed across classroom and Extension teaching, as negotiated) and 30% research. The anticipated start date is Autumn 2023 or once a suitable candidate is identified.
Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be an individual whose work focuses on animal welfare. The successful candidate will be a leader in animal welfare education, including both formalized classroom instruction and Extension education aimed at youth and adult audiences. The distribution of effort dedicated to classroom teaching and Extension education is negotiable and dependent on the strengths of the successful candidate. The successful candidate will work in cross-disciplinary teams to build on a culture of academic collaboration that advances the pursuit of knowledge within the Departmental themes, which include Animal Development & Physiology; Nutrition & the Microbiome; Animal Health & Disease; and Animal Welfare & Human-Animal Interactions. This position will have active engagement with the Center for Human-Animal Interactions Research and Education (CHAIRE). The successful candidate may serve as the center’s Director to advance the scientific study of animals and interrelationships between people, animals, and the environment.
Establishment of a sustainable research program that is nationally and internationally recognized is also expected. Candidates with expertise in animal welfare of swine, poultry, or cattle are preferred. Training and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students are required. All faculty are expected to be supportive of and engaged in all three mission areas of the Land Grant University (Research, Teaching and Extension). Faculty members have a shared responsibility to support and sustain the CFAES Principles of Community and function in a collegial fashion.
The Department of Animal Sciences: Housed within the CFAES, the Department provides formal and informal learning opportunities, in and out of the classroom, to both undergraduate and graduate students. The Department guides students in achieving their goals and to become the next generation of industry and academic leaders. Undergraduate students can choose to minor or major in Animal Sciences. Major degree specializations, include Animal Biosciences, Animal Industries, and Veterinary Technology. The Department offers a robust graduate program (https://ansci.osu.edu/graduate/programs) that awards MS and PhD degrees. There are approximately 45 graduate students and 550 undergraduates enrolled in departmental majors. Research, Extension and education programs in the Department aim to increase the economic profitability of production animals and the quality of their products, improve animal welfare and food animal health, lessen the environmental impact of production animal systems, and foster human-animal relationships.
The Department employs 40 faculty and 85 staff members across the Columbus and Wooster campuses and the statewide research centers. The Department maintains herds and flocks of major food-producing animals for experimental studies. Excellent opportunities are available for collaboration with food-, veterinary-, medical-, animal-, and plant scientists on the Columbus and Wooster campuses; exceptional collaboration opportunities also exist with Extension agents located at each of the 88 Extension offices throughout the state. Qualifications: Applicants are required to have an earned doctorate in animal sciences or a closely allied discipline at time of the position’s commencement. Documented evidence of individual and/or collaborative research and teaching efforts in animal welfare is desired. Experience developing or working in interdisciplinary research teams, and experience in working with and mentoring members of underrepresented groups is preferred. Applicants must possess strong interpersonal and communication skills. Individuals applying to the rank of Associate or Full Professor should have a sustained demonstrated record of excellence in animal welfare education and/or research that is commensurate with such a rank.
