Job Description

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the Cooper Union is currently accepting submissions from qualified candidates to teach the History and Theory of Art. We seek an active, culturally diverse faculty of the highest caliber with an academic background in the following: pre-17th century art history topics, with an emphasis on the non-west; art of the Global South; art, ecology, and climate change; art and mental health; art and race; art and indigeneity. A demonstrated record of teaching is preferred.

We aspire to continue to grow as a place that welcomes and encourages individuals of all backgrounds to contribute to and be part of The Cooper Union. We believe that diversity, equity, and inclusion are essential components of academic excellence. We value and are seeking candidates with a variety of social identities including those who have been underrepresented in higher education. Those who possess skills that spark innovation and who — through their scholarly pursuits, teaching, and/or service experiences — bring expertise in engaging and sustaining a unified and just community are strongly encouraged to apply.

About The Cooper Union:

The Cooper Union was founded in 1859 by philanthropist Peter Cooper to provide an education “equal to the best” to all who qualify, regardless of race, religion, gender, wealth or social status. Today, The Cooper Union provides a rigorous professional education in the Schools of Art, Architecture, and Engineering, including a broad curriculum offered by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Fostering a culture of collaboration among a diverse student body and faculty, The Cooper Union teaches students that art, architecture, and engineering have cultural, environmental, and ethical contexts and consequences. As students develop their professional abilities, they recognize their responsibility to advance science and art and to create a sustainable future.

Qualifications:

ABD or PhD degree in area(s) of experience or equivalent and demonstrated strong teaching record preferred. Salary and rank are commensurate with experience. This is a unionized position.

How to apply:

Review of applications are ongoing and will continue until the position is filled. Please submit your CV, cover letter, and sample syllabi (if available) to hr@cooper.edu. Letters of recommendation are optional.
