The Department of Geography and the Environment, the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, Syracuse University invites applications for a tenure track position in the area of Cartography and Geovisualization at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. Ph.D. is required at time of appointment.

We seek a geographer whose scholarship focuses on conceptual, critical, empirical, experimental, and/or theoretical work in cartography. This includes scholars whose research and teaching contributes to any of the following areas:

  • Cartography in the digital era, including geovisualization of big data, drone data, and sensor data, geoanalytics, autonomous systems/geoAI, and web mapping
  • Map design, geoliteracy, cartographic education, and the science of communication
  • Indigenous cartographies, feminist visualization, critical cartography, critical GIS, and the politics of maps and mapping
  • Community mapping, counter mapping, participatory mapping, and participatory GIS
  • Cartographic theory
  • History of cartography and historical GIS
  • GeoHumanities and cartography as art
  • Public health, hazards, vulnerability, and crisis mapping

Candidates should demonstrate clear evidence of a strong research program and successful teaching experience as well as a demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion. We are particularly interested in hiring a cartographer who is both trained in and able to teach traditional cartography and cartography in the digital era, including web mapping, geo-visualization of big data, drone data, and sensor data. Programming experience (e.g., Python) and work with large datasets is an advantage. In addition to a primary focus in cartography and geospatial technologies, the successful candidate will make significant contributions to one of our department’s other research and teaching clusters.

In addition to strengthening our department’s research and teaching concentration in GIS and Geospatial Technologies, we seek a scholar with potential to contribute to initiatives across the Maxwell School and the broader university. Syracuse University’s Community Geography Program is a leader in publicly engaged scholarship. Opportunities for interdisciplinary research beyond the department include the Autonomous Systems Policy Institute; the Moynihan Institute of Global Affairs; the Program for the Advancement of Research on Conflict and Cooperation; the Campbell Public Affairs Institute; the Center for Environmental Policy and Administration; and regional programs in the Middle East, South Asia, East Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, and European Union, and others. The Department maintains strong collaborative links with other departments and programs in the Maxwell School, as well as scholars in the Native American and Indigenous Studies Program and the Departments of African American Studies, Women’s and Gender Studies, Food Studies, and Earth and Environmental Sciences. Syracuse University’s campus adjoins the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY ESF) and the Department of Geography and the Environment maintains close collaborative relationships with SUNY ESF faculty and students. Syracuse University has recently invested considerable resources in establishing cross-disciplinary research clusters, including in the areas of Big Data and Data Analytics; Artificial Intelligence, Autonomous Systems and the Human-Technology Frontier; Quantum Information Science; Virtual and Immersive Interactions; Social Differences, Social Justice; and Energy and Environment (among others), which present exciting opportunities for collaborative, interdisciplinary research and teaching.
