ASSISTANT/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR

in Environmental Health/Environmental Justice

The Department of Environmental Studies at the College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF), State University of New York, invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant/Associate Professor of Environmental Health (academic year appointment). The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in the college and develop an externally funded research program that complements the existing strengths of faculty in the Environmental Studies Department and in the Environmental Health program.  A strong interest in teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate level is essential: the position will entail teaching two undergraduate courses for the Environmental Health major, Foundations of Environmental Health and Environmental Health Management, as well as an upper level/graduate course in Environmental Studies, in the area of Quantitative Methods for Measuring Environmental Inequality.

Required Qualifications: A Ph.D., M.D., or Sc.D. in an Environmental Health, Environmental Science, or a related Social Science field with research interests and/or expertise in Environmental Justice and Environmental Health.

Preferred Qualifications: Prior postdoctoral and/or professional environmental health experience, a record of extramural funding supporting research, evidence of interdisciplinary collaboration, and experience in research complementing the research strengths of the Environmental Studies department and the Environmental Health program. We are especially interested in candidates who have demonstrated experience in research, teaching, and/or service to historically underrepresented and underserved communities.

The Program, Major and the College: The curriculum of the Environmental Studies program (http://www.esf.edu/es/) integrates the social and biophysical sciences and the humanities. The department offers Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degrees in Environmental Studies and Environmental Education and Interpretation; Master of Professional Studies (M.P.S.) and Master of Science (M.S.) degrees in Environmental Studies; and Online Graduate Certificates in environmental Leadership, Environmental Justice and Inequality, and Science & Environmental Communication and Public Relations Management.  Faculty in the Department of Environmental Studies mentor Ph.D. students in the Division of Environmental Science.

The Environmental Health major (http://www.esf.edu/environmentalscience/envhealth/) was established in 2014 and is housed in the Division of Environmental Science. The goal of the major is to prepare students to move into governmental, NGO or graduate academic positions under the broad range of careers that comprise the field of Environmental Health. The Environmental Health program is one of 28 nationally accredited programs in Environmental Health by the National Environmental Health Science and Protection Accreditation Council and the only one in the northeastern US.

The Division of Environmental Science (http://www.esf.edu/environmentalscience/ ) is a multi-disciplinary program, drawing faculty from all departments across the campus. It has an enrollment of over 100 graduate students and 200 undergraduates, distributed between the Environmental Science and Environmental Health majors. The Division offers Bachelor of Science (B.S.), Master of Professional Studies (M.P.S.) and Master of Science (M.S.) and the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees in Environmental Science.

Founded in 1911, the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) is the nation’s oldest and most respected school dedicated to the study of the environment, developing renewable technologies and building a sustainable future. The ESF main campus is in Syracuse, NY and has regional campuses throughout Central New York and the Adirondack Park. SUNY-ESF has more than 25,000 acres of field and forest properties at seven experimental field stations, offering abundant opportunity for field-oriented research in aquatic and terrestrial environments.  The Syracuse Center for Excellence in Environmental and Energy Systems (http://www.syracusecoe.org/) is located nearby, facilitating collaborative research with a number of local industries and universities in the areas of Green Infrastructure and Renewable Resources.  The Biotechnology Accelerator Facility (http://www.upstate.edu/accelerator/) offers opportunities for developing technologies started in the lab into commercial ventures. Along with Upstate Medical University, Onondaga Community College and Oswego College, SUNY-ESF was a recipient of a $15 million competitive grant to create the SUNY Institute of Environmental Health and Environmental Medicine.
